I'm not an expert on HDR, but it looks like your highlight levels are way to low.
Try upping the highlights, lower the shadows just a bit, and play around with the color saturation.

try going darker instead of so bright. how many pictures you take? for a good photo, i think you'd need like 5+ and i see most HDR pictures are in the dark. makes the lights have stronger colors and that makes the picture have more contrast thats why they're so visually appealing.

If you want post a pic thats untouched and ill play around with it. But yeah, as to what ll1l2l1l2lll (man thats hard to type out lol ) its best to use multiple pics (i like to use 3) where each photo is DARK, LIGHT and the ORIGINAL.

nice attempt, but that's not at all hdr, rather tone mapping

true hdr should not look 'surrealistic' or 'cartoonish' at all, but instead should look as close to real life as possible, exactly as the human eyes would have seen it. All hdr does is merge multiple exposures (or alternatively a very very high quality raw image) between -2 --> +2 so that details usually lost due to over/underexposure (such as the clouds in the sky or background) are all seen in one single picture. So it basically is just a 'perfectly exposed' picture representing reality.

Here's some examples of real hdr:

That last picture is perfect, flip.

Keep trying though! Photography and editting is just like anything, takes a lot of practicing. Keep messing with stuff and see what works.

what did you set your exposure bracket to? I'm still learning myself but I usually take 3 pics @ -2, 0, +2. Always use a tripod and use a remote shutter if possible to reduce all chance of movement/vibration. It seems like you went a bit overboard in photomatix, play with the settings a bit more. Theres also a LOT of info on HDR, just google it or head over to the photography section here.

of course, I have to whore out my fav HDR shot that I took, a bit on the surreal side though
