Lightest forged wheels in 17" for our CL-S

Note: this "project" is coming after headers and sways but...

I really like the looks of Astroyboy's Volks racing SE-37As, but I'd like to buy some 17" versions one day (his are 18" wheels and the SE-37As are only available in 18" [or so I was told]). I will put my Toyos on them, but weight and strength are my main concerns!

1. Do they only make the light weight Volks SE-37As in 18" and the SE-37Ks in non-silver?

2. The Racing Hart CP-035 are supposed to be very light at just over 7 lbs. I also like these.

So, does anyone know if they make a silver clear coat wheel with a spoke pattern like the wheels I mentioned with:

1. Forged construction (forget about the cost -- I want wheels at least as strong as stock).

2. 17"x7.5" or 17"x8" with 48+ offset (or an offset close to the stock +55).

I want to reduce unsprung weight, stick with 17", reduce rotational inertia, and want to be able to count on some real strength.

Any comments about these wheels and others *and* has anyone working with Wheel Warehouse in Anaheim.

If you have the names or links to some other very strong and light wheels, please let me know.

Thanks!

EricL,
You might try Kinesis or Fikse if price is no object. I have SSR Competition wheels for track wheels. They are forged, and at a little under 15 lbs. for 17x8's are reasonably light.

The SSR Comps look nice, I was checking them out. Does anyone know what the weight of the stock wheels are?

Eric, check this out.

http://volkracing.co.jp/lineup_1999/...indx_se37k.htm

This is the 17 inch version of the SE37A. Volk makes a 17x17.5 rim with a +48 offset that will sell for ~$550-600.

Here's their distributor list and someone will be able to order you a set.
I was going to buy these rims and new tires but I didn't think that ~10hp for over $3k was worth it. A SC would be a better choice IMO.

EricL,

You can also look at HRE forged rims. Light and custom made to fit your car with the offset you wish. I believe it's www.HREwheels.com

Tel1sps: The stock weight is 24-26lbs depending on who tells you.

Now Kenny, your next mission if you chose to accept it, is to find pics of all the above wheels. Seriously though, if you could that be sweet. Actually will all the above wheels fit on the CL? Thanks.

I checked the prices on their site. I hope the prices are for a set of 4! Not per wheel.

for example, I hope that the price of set of 4 of (543, 18x8 ) would be $1037 or some $260 per wheel. Otherwise, they are nuts!

I am not sure if the Stark MS will fit the CL-S as the ones that I've researched only have the lug nuts in 5 x 114 as the closest to our 5 x 114.3.

But they are so pretty. Anybody know the weight of some of those HRE wheels? 345, 346? Deep dishish with OEM like 5 or 6 spokes. I like.

Sure, they are pretty and look nice but you will hate yourself for life and kick yourself hard when you hit 3"x4" on HW, fall in a black hole, or try to get your CLS initiated like roaster, and here you go, you just burnt couple grands, baby ....

You DO know about HRE wheels right?

Good grief, their wheels cost an arm and a leg (and your other arm and leg as well). They make tuner car wheels, I believe the Twin Turbo Lingenfelter C5 had HRE make them wheels for that car, as well as some Porsche's. So don't expect any breaks from them. Personally I would expect the lowest to pay per wheel for a 17" forged is around $400. The Most I, personally would pay, for a wheel is $600. My dream wheel, the Mugen MF10 costs that much, and until I find another that can sweep me off my feet even more... it's the Mugen MF-10.

Have you checked out the NSX's rear forged alloys - (17 x 8.5) with an offset of 60mm and weighing about 19 lbs or so ? The bolt pattern, center bore etc., is an identical replica of the CL-s/TL's stock wheels. Also, if needed, I can dig out the photograph somebody posted a while back, after installing the NSX rims on their 3.2TL.

The forged alloys of the NSX front wheels are (16 x 7) with an offset of 55mm...which I believe would not serve your purpose.

The dealer would probably quote you something like 1000 bucks a rim (NSX), but you can get them at www.aaarims.com for about 490 bucks a pop for the rear NSX rims.

Nup, the HRE are per RIM. Not to long ago some guy was doing a groupbuy on these. He couldn't post any prices because basically they are custom. But oh what a rim.

I like these rims, anyone know about the quality of them? I heard they are pretty nice. Around $400/piece.

http://www.racinghart.com/wheel.asp?mkid=20&mdlid=101

ERICL: The offset of these rims is +50. And the guys at DAZZ said that it would fit nicely.

technique; those are C5's; the 3 piece are around 380$ a piece i think. I hope you don't live in cali though. BEcause those are probally the ricers favorite wheel. I honestly see 4 sets of them a day at least at school. Whether they are knock-offs or the real deal.

Ya, I do live in cali. I'm thinking about avoiding them cause they are ricey.

I think I have found my rim. The SSR Integrals as recommended by Ken. BUT, tire rack won't recommend them as the offset of the 17X8's is +45 and they only recommend the SSR competition at that width which have an offset of +48. With 235 tires I wonder if this will matter. They said they'd ship me one rim so I could try it out. Anyone know ahead of time that this will NOT work?

Hey Technique,
My street wheels are OZ's in 17x8 with a 44 offset. I am running 225/45/17 no rubbing whatsoever. This is also with Comptech springs, sways, and Koni's.

Thanks a lot guys. I appreciate the time and effort. I'm going to print out the info so far and see what's cooking.

I like the Volks SE-37Ks in 17x7.5, but I don't think they make them in silver.

The Racing Hart C5s are nice, but being in Los Angeles I think I would feel like a clone.

Finally, the Racing Hart 035s are very light, but I just don't know about white wheels on a silver car.

I need to look over some of the other pictures. There is some interesting stuff to look over.

Is there a site anywhere that has a list of wheels with sizes, offsets, and weights?

Thanks again -- if you guys come up with any more info I would appreciate it.

Hehe, yeah some of those wheels were pretty challenging to find. The hardest one too find was the aguzze. The watanabe's I found on a japanese website. I can't recall the name. I basically found the rims then saved the picture. Luckily I knew what they looked like. The starks and hamaan's I found on a european car website I think they use those wheels on bmw's or benzo's. Sometimes what I do also is buy those japanese car magazines to look @ the rims. I can't read a lick of japanese but I still check out the pictures and ads of the wheels. I even flip through the magazines the japanese way, from back to front.

Hey guys, don't get me wrong but I understand why you want to reduce unsprung weight, but have any of you thought about leavin' your friends at home (150#+)? How 'bout hittin' the gym? I know, flame all you want, but I know that I personally am trying to lose more than any two wheels could possibly weigh, so screw it. I'll buy the wheels I like rather than thinking solely about unsprung weight.

Hmmm.... I think someone didn't read about rotational inertia. Also, there are a number of unbelievers regarding the benefits of light weight wheels independent of unsprung weight.

I hope people don't think that 5 lbs of lost wheel weight equals 5 lbs of less non-rotating weight.

Hmmm... Thought for the day -- why do racer's lighten flywheels -- extend this thinking to the rest of the car's drive train.

BTW -- I could sure loose some weight, but I can't just toss friends and family out the window when I'm driving. Let me see, "hey buddy, wait a second, I need to toss my mother and kid out the window before I can race you..."

I understand rotational mass and unsprung vs. sprung weight. I just don't understand his rationale about going to the gym and losing weight and leavin friends @ home.
