6-Speed DYNO test today – Results & Pics

Went for a DYNO test today.
I was going to PASS because it was so damn HOT out, but decided to go anyway.

Performance enhancements on the car are a Xephyr Cold Air Intake and Comptech Headers.
Mods that may reduce my performance a bit are my 18” Chrome Blingers and wider rubber.
The car has 4,400 miles on it.

It was 87 Degrees out but humidity was relatively low.
There were FIVE runs total done in either 3rd or 4th gear.
Highest reading was 230.2 in 3rd and the lowest was 226.6 in 4th.

Here YA go.
Expert opinions welcome.

Shawn S

You just love showing off them wheels huh? lol Hmmm does anyone know what 230whp= to at the crank?

Also, its possible the intake detracted from your performance since it was so hot outside. Can someone confirm or correct this

why in the world would you waste your money on dyno'ing your car with your heavy wheels on, i bet you lost a good amount of hp. 275 at the crank would be around 230 at the wheels for a manual..........but he should be pushing 240-245 in normal conditions with stock rims.

Well, I was interested in what I was getting for my everyday power.
Why put stock wheels on if I don’t run with them ???

The slight loss of HP for the KICK ASS LOOK is a trade-off I’m willing to make.

By the way, my wheels/tires are EXACTLY the same weight as the stock 17’s.
I measured both when I was doing the swap.
48 pounds with tires mounted I think.
I know the overall rotating mass is larger though, so THAT hurts.

You know, i did notice when i took off my rim one time, that they are very heavy for stock rims...........but you are right the difference in rotation mass will hurt you.

It also depends on where the rotating mass is,near the center or out at the circumference. The further out, the harder it is to turn.

The weather does hurt as timing will be affected and no SAE compensation will account for that. IMO, that doesn't look bad, again, with all things considered.

Yes, temperature makes a HUGE difference, especially with a turbo.

This place (KD Rotary) specializes in RX-7’s.
Last week we had a major heat wave in eastern PA.
Temps were in the upper 90’s all week.

They had a Gen III Mazda RX-7 there with MAJOR MODS and aftermarket twin turbos.
In the afternoon it tested at just over 300 HP.

The owner was disappointed so he paid everyone to come back at midnight.
With the cooler temps they got the sucker to produce over 340 HP !!!!!

How come the numbers are so low? I was expecting at leat 240 even with the temp so high, Shawn, are you planning on doing another run with the temps being cooler?

Guess I wont feel too bad about running up against a 6speed if that ever happens. It will all depend on if that guy can shift or not.

over a stock slushbox yeah It's only 10-15HP over a stock 6MT. But like has been said, temp, humidity, etc. play a factor, as well as inconsistencies between dynos.

I have a couple of mystery mods of my own As soon as they're installed I'll get another dyno and reveal the mods.

We didn't dyno the cars in the same shop so there's bound to be some variance. It was 15 degrees cooler in San Diego but more humid. At 4k+ miles Shawn's car probably isn't completely broken in.

Next dyno session I'm putting the stock wheels back on for the 1st run and then the SSRs go on to see if how hp they free up. I'm guess 4-8 hp, but we'll see.

Shawn, i think you should of dynoed in 4th or 5th to get the most accurate info. your 3rd is 1:1.700, when the auto is 1:1.021.

if you look at your 4th and 5th its much closer to 1:1.

Automatic
Automatic / Manual

1st
2.563
2.563 / 3.933

2nd
1.552
1.552 / 2.478

3rd
1.021
1.021 / 1.700

4th
0.653
0.653 / 1.250

5th
0.470
0.470 / 0.976

6th
na
na / 0.771

Reverse
1.846
1.846 / 4.008

Final
4.428
4.428 / 3.286

Nice catch Joe! Back to the dyno for you Shawn. Maybe they'll cut you a break because the car was dyno'd in the wrong gear?

It means that everybody should calm down a bit. All the dynos have been done on relatively new cars in the summer months. The true gains will be seen in the winter.

Sorry....I didn’t get any kind of computer file. All I got was the paper printout from the machine.

I took along a floppy disc, but the tech didn’t know how to export the file or even a JPG to it.
I asked to give it try myself, but they weren’t too crazy about allowing that.

Too bad…

I don’t understand why you would want to do this.
I think full REDLINE in 5th gear would be WAY too fast to push the front tires when hooked up to a stationary machine like this.

Actuator is working fine.
I checked it the day before the DYNO run.
Plus, I believe that little dip in the charts at about 3,800 RPM is signifying when the actuator opened.
Am I right on this ???

The dip and rise after that signifies a functioning actuator.

I just read the same posts and what are you talking about ? And what's with the slowness ? Maybe the point from all is the surprise that he dynoed less to the wheels than the auto with headers.
