You CAN drift in the CL-S... Really.

I'm talking balls out, full-on, "Nissan Maxima commercial" powerslide. I've been thinking about new tires and tonight I proved to myself without a doubt that I definitely need new rubber...

I was heading North coming up on an intersection at about 35 mph looking to make a left-hander. I didn't have an arrow, but rather a "proceed with caution" green and the last car heading south had just cleared the intersection with another guy getting into his turn lane opposite mine. Since the coast was clear I briskly accelerated through the turn watching the guy across from me start to get squirrely. Sure enough, that cock knocker decides to exit the turn lane and head South instead, all the while not even bothering to FUCKING SIGNAL! What's more, he's gunning right for me with no sign of letting up and I'm only half-way through the turn.

A quick stomp of the throttle in second and I'm starting to plow pretty hard with the RPMs climbing but only lackluster acceleration. Fortunately, I had picked the most perfect line and hit the apex dead-on right before my tires start SCREAMING like stuck pigs as they suddenly let go and the plow gets even worse. Now that I've cleared the intersection, I've built up an incredible amount of momentum and continue to peg the throttle to counteract the natural reaction to lift or brake (Thank God I graduated from the "I will not lift" school of driving.) Here it is kids, a truly VULGAR display of power as I slide through the apex. The tail swinging right, front wheels absolutely SHREDDING, and RPMs climbing to 5000. A slight correction to the steering input puts me right back on track, and I even have time to glance over at people in the opposite lanes with their mouths hanging open and flash 'em a big .

I doubt this could be done with fresh tires, but the OEMs with 19K miles on them have absolutely started to suck, and I've even got about 1/16th of an inch left before hitting the wear bars. BTW, this was all accomplished in BONE DRY conditions. I'd hate to be in that spot of trouble in the wet. Probably would have posting about being t-boned instead.

No. VSA is always off unless it's rainy out.

Probbaly nothing Take my word for it, albit the conditions were a little wet the last day of the high speed track event at Texas Motor Speedway this previous February, but with VSA on (does it really work I am starting to think to myself) the car still decided to go sideways (with me unfortunately on the driver side of the vehicle that proceeded to turn into the front of the car at that point and time ), entering one of the turns pretty hot and heavy. Pretty hair raising experience, but nevertheless would do it all over again

I too always turn off my VSA in dry conditions and I'll tell you why.

I'm making a left at a stoplight where it is kind of tough to see traffic coming at you b/c there is a slight hill. I get into the middle of the intersection where I waited to make sure it was safe to turn. I mad my decision and gave it a little gas to get through the intersection quickly b/c the cars come up over the hill very quickly. I hit gravel/rock salt or whatever in the middle of the intersection and instead of letting me give it gas and battle through it the fucking VSA cuts my power and I'm sitting there dead in the water. Mind you I made it through, but I do not like not being in control of the actions of my car and I;m sure I would have been better off without VSA in thsoe conditions.

I really think VSA is almost worthless. In the snow where it might actually be useful. without snow tires it really doesn't help much anyways. In the rain is hasn't helped me one bit (and, in fact when I first got the car I plowed right through an off ramp no problem and VSA didn't do me one bit of good).

I've driven for many years in snow and bad weather and have never had an accident b/c of weather relying on just one rule, SLOW DOWN. Our car is so front heavy and our tires are too much performance oriented (and we already have FWD) for such a system to be of that much value.

I agree with JZ and JSuppi... I have yet to see VSA do anything. I had it on the entire time we were playin' yesterday and I didn't get a peep out of the thing. And this included the time I got the tail to step out a couple feet when lifting the throttle on the apex of a left curve that goes over a hill simultaneously (no, I don't have a death wish - its fun, really - you should try it!)

I had such a blast yesterday in this car. You can have your RWD, this car is still fun in the curves. Of course, the springs/sways probably have a lot to do with that! The only thing negative I will say about this car is that the brakes are borderline horrendous. My car had very serious brake fade after only bout 15 min of 9/10ths driving on some of the most challenging roads you can think of. That may be my next upgrade (ok, well, after the CAI). We REALLY need some serious brake work.

I drifted my CLS too just a little more barbaric. I was leaving the brooklyn meet when idiot Soopa and StonedCL and Winter all hit the gas on this straitaway. We all had to hit at least 80 - or - 90 when all of a sudden every made a HARD right. I cut the wheel mashed the pedal and prayed. The car drifted about 3-4 feet left and then I recovered and checked my shorts. Way cool, felt like I was in the movie Ronin but I could hear my tires crying to me why I did that.

Come on, you can do a better drift than that.
Drifts aren't drifts till you're taking a sweeping left (and you 'DO' lift the gas) and have the steering wheel pegged to the right. That's drifting!

Just to clarify here...

I don't think I'm some kind of bad-ass just because I slid through an intersection. The thing that amazed me the most was the fact that the tires completely broke traction and were positively shredding through a drift in a FWD car. It was so smooth and effortless. No wheel hop, no torque steer, just beautiful, smoking tires and an engine screaming at 5000+ RPMs.

I just didn't think that was possible in this car.
