Xephyr Polished CAI GTECH Runs !
Xephyr Polished CAI GTECH Runs !
Ladies/Gents:
Well this morning on my way to work I did a few 0-60 runs with the Xephyr Polished CAI ... And the preliminary runs were very encouraging.. Either my car is extraordinarily fats or this intake is incredible ...or GTECH is wayyyy off..... BUT here is the situation:
I work out in the boonies so I go down a long farm road the back way to work. The road is twisty however there is a length just under a 1/4 mile that is flat, straight, and seems very level. There are cut down corn fields on both sides so I can see if and police cars are in route... The outside temperature was 22 degrees farenheit. My first run was in D4 VSA off. Tuned the GTECh to 0, made sure it was straight... waited for the "Go" and here are the outcomes....
1) 6.22 Sec. (Yesterday, 19 deg farenheit, VSA off, SS, mild wheel spin)
2) 6.68 Sec. (Yesterday, same as above but massive wheel spin)
3) 6.05 Sec. (Today, 22 deg farenheit, VSA Off, D4, slight spin)
4) 6.10 Sec. (Today, Same as #2, little more spin)
5) 6.08 Sec. (Today, Same as #2 & #3, nice clean launch, spinning but accelerating)
The runs yesterday were done with about 3/4 tank of gas, the runs today were with just over 1/4 tank of gas. Today's were +/- .03 consistently in both directions on the same street. I thought that might help if there was som pitch to the road if I ran both ways.. So please hit me with some follow-up of what others have had with their CAI's. I'm completely stock aside from the CAI and some bulb upgrades.
So is my car that fast...? Is my Intake that good? Or is GTECH off....? I still feel I can get a better launch but...will have to wait till tonight to try and do some 1/4's and HP #'s .....

Hey try torque braking, I think that's what its called. When I do launches I hold down the brake and rev my car up right around 2500 to 3000. I always get a great launch w/ min. wheel spin.

Well since the G-tech works by an accelerometer, the squat the car exhibits under hard acceleration, (especially from a stop) will skew some results. You will see a difference if you add springs, even though your time will not appreciably increase or decrease in actuality.
Just a heads up.
But good runs. Fast car.

I would never want to discredit your runs, in fact I would like to highten them.
But the times look right on with what I would expect with the conditions.
Back in August when I installed a modified AEM intake (originally made for the TL, just shortened) I made similar tests. Prior to this, during the summer I had made a number of runs in stock form. Most resulting in a 6.3 - 6.4 range with temps in the 70's - 80's in most cases. I also made runs in my wife's '99 328i 5-Speed to verify the accuracy of the unit. These normally resulted in a 6.6 - 6.8, greater delta due to being a stick. But still inline with other tests for the E46 3-series.
Then, when my IMRC went out I made several runs. Most were in the 6.9 range. Kinda what you would expect with a consistent drop of nearly 25lb/ft from 4k up.
Once fixed I was back down to 6.3. Then the intake went on, the next day the tests were made. Temps were in the mid 60's but I was able to lay down several 6.1's. At this point I was being prodded by other forum members to have my wife drive to get into the 5's, very funny...
But back in December when it got unusually cold here in the south I made passes on a few occasions with the result being all in the high 5's. A best to date of 5.83.
BTW, the BMW's best in these conditions is still well in the 6's, 6.36...
So, in all, the intake is worth about 2 tenths IMO. Which places you right where I would expect considering all the other inaccuracies, GTECH, road conditions, launch style, etc. (We have some decent roads around here that stick well...)

BTW, what mounting are you using for support?? I ask since the AEM uses a welded entension bolted to a 1" thick grommet to allow some engine flex while supporting the whole system
I did a custom intake in my '97 GTP, first on the GTP list... But support issues always plagued me, not that there were any problems. I was just that I was never sure.

What did that beast run at the track?
