WTF 6 speed clutches and Comptech flywheel - clutch

OK - so I replaced my clutch with the Comptech doo-hickey. 2800$ After rental for a WEEK.

I just got it today, wow, it felt great... at first.

I drove it for oh, a total of 45 minutes today.

Gues what? It's making a bunch of CRAZY ass noise when I shift, AND it's getting dramatically harder to SHIFT! WTF!!!???

I'M TIRED OF THESE CLUTCHES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!

Sounds like either the clutch cable is stretched or the clutch is faulty. Alot of times with higher strength aftermarket clutche's in mustang it will stretch out the stock cable or the quadrant gets worn over time. However, I havent heard of any doing it in such a short timeframe. I had a clutch in my Mustang that wasnt disengaging properly when I pushed the clutch in, and I was having to literally jam it into gear if I let off the clutch when I came to a light and stopped. Just take it back asap and get them to fix it.

I had my tranny re-installed at Acura 101... so they have seen the Comptech unit before. One thing they did funny was over-stretch the shifter-cables... which I re-adjusted after the fact - did Miguel do the install?

CLutch cables do not exist on CL/S .It is hydraulic ,what you are describing sounds very much like a dampener spring on the clutch disk having failed .

Could it be that they didn't use the special pressure plate compressor to do the job? I think they would know about it after doing Allmotor's clutch.

Yup! Miguel did the install...

He mentioned someone once before getting the Comptech unit after about 20k miles, was that you by any chance?

I'll have this POS Integra loaner for a week now... that's two weeks in 30 days w/ a loaner

Thanks for the input guys.

And I don't know what a shifter cable is... what's that all about? YOU had to do that!?

I hope this gets figured out because I was seriously thinking about this purchase as my first major mod to the new 6 speed.

I hate the way this car takes 15 minutes to drop RPM's between shifts...makes you drive like an old woman...

Keep us posted, please.

the design of the clutch to keep the rpms up there (actually gives a slight rpm increase when clutch is engaged fully....) is something that helps with quicker shifting , but the driver must execute the shifting very fluidly and rapidly

I like the way it holds the rpms between gears. I always quick shift basically, so it makes the transition a little mor fluid. I don't like the frone end dive when I shift however.

Well, when I go from 5th to 3rd...that lag doesn't help me do shit.

Still takes longer to match throttle position with actual response. A lighter FW will def help that situation.

the heavy DMF is nice for quick heel-toe downshifts when the engine speed and trannyspeed are relatively close.

Rental $45.00 X 7= 315.00
Labor/Install = $1485.00
A Comptech Doo-hickey= $1000.00

Not knowing the name for the part you just purchased and spent 1000 dollars on = PRICELESS....

Thanks for the Friday afternoon laugh...

Best wishes to you, looks like your going to need it.

Allmotor:

I just read your other thread topic...

Maybe the stock Acura clutch was "raced" but he never mentioned the ECU issue when I spoke with him about my stock clutch. Which leads me to believe that he doesn't feel comfortable 100% about declaring that relevant.

And I was NOT racing my Comptech clutch! I should have been given something that actually worked. If the "groaning" was something that's normal for the first 500 miles, (I spoke with Miguel the service consultant earlier today) TELL me about it before I bring it in! Miguel also said that you had them re-adjust it... so I asked him if he could just make it acceptable to drive with the same adjustment... I didn't get a straight answer and just told him I'd bring it up Tuesday when his team gets back from the weekend break.

It was just a very strane response from him (Miguel). I only used it as an example of whether Acura can/cannot detect 'stuff' about the car when its in for warranty. I don't know your particular situation well to comment, but that other thread does not say you 'raced' or did not 'race' - it only discusses what the dealer can/cannot extract from the car's ECU. If there is a difference in the way your car shifts pre vs. post-install, then they have to correct that - as the Comtpech unit has no effect on the shifting of the car.

25k, but that was the stock clutch... I mean, whatever, I'm dealing with that... that's why I decided to get the Comptech because I can be more aggressive with it... fine, but now THIS doesn't work properly? I'm just sour about it...

Well, you and I are in the same boat now... let's see what Acura 101 is going to do.

By the way... I really think you should find out of Acura 101 used the special pressure-plate compressing tool when they installed your clutch... because it is pretty obvious they did not on mine - will be talking to Miguel on Tuesday. I think you need to give me a call (PM for my #). It's the same tech that did my install that is working on your car... and it is quite possible they have overlooked this.

Thank you for your efforts, I aprreciate them.

I did get your PM and I will call you soon.

Why wouldn't they use the tool? Is it too pricey?

Well.... I a not sure they didn't use it... but considering what happened (and my experience with what happened before), I am pretty sure they didn't use it. Even if the tool is $2K, Acura should use it!! If not I wouldn't have spent money for them to install the damn tranny back!

I agree.

You've expressed damage to your tranny probably because of dealer install error. If they installed my clutch/flywheel the same as yours, what kind of damage would you guesstimate I would have accumilated for only driving the car for a day? Now I'm just curious as to whether or not damage has been done.

Also, how should the clutch feel when shifting? Because it feels lighter to the touch, if you follow... I didn't "feel" the disengaging... is that normal quite as much? Should it feel exactly the same as the stock clutch?

It is still TBD whether Acura 101 West didn't use the pressure-plate compression tool. But considering the symptoms and the fact that during the initial install I didn't use the tool and had the same problems, I am 99% sure they didn't use it.

According to the service manual, even removing or installing the pressure-plate ONCE without the compression-tool 'irreversibly damages' the pressure-plate. So... if they didn't use it on your install... you need to replace it. The real damage occurs in a month or two when the clip snaps and eats up the CPS (crankshaft position sensor) and damages the flywheel - which has happened again to me.

We'll see how this plays out. I have informed Comptech, as they should know about this even if it was an install-error.

The shifting shouldn't change.... although the clutch will 'bite' a little more.

Acura has placed 2 calls / day to Comptech and have received no response... SO... no loaner... no nothing... I am PISSED I couldn't call them today... will find out tomorrow! This is absurd.

Acura SAID they used the tool on my car... although I don't quite believe them cuz I went into their shop and saw the tool personally... it looks quite new to me and unused!

However... I can't dispute that - I think they want to blame it on a product issue.

IF they used the tool on my car... then it has to be something else!

More to come...
