Wow, What a Difference, Part 1

In preparing for taking delivery of the 6-Speed I started taking parts off of my car. Last night I removed the RES, Pulleys and Intake. When I individually installed them I really could tell a difference in power (sound maybe from the intake). But collectively removed there was a noticeable difference in power; just a slightly noticeable drop in overall torque throughout the rev band.

During this process I recalled why air tools are nearly a must for the pulley swap. The alternator retaining nut should really be worked with an impact gun. I really don't see how someone could be sure it is secure otherwise. But my darn compressor kept kicking the breaker; got to look into that one...

On to the headers and the sway bars tonight, that should take 3 to 3.5 hours and all will be done!! I'm curious what it will feel like to be driving a completely stock CL-S. It hasn't been stock for about two years now.

The one thing I really did notice about the RES is the change in character. As mentioned before, there seemed to be a surge at about 3500 revs with enough throttle input. Now with it removed I had now transition in power. This will be interesting to see on the dyno...

Thanks for the update Steve. You'll be a mere human once the stock headers are back on.

Trust me, the stock CLS will feel so neutered once you get over like 2500rpm. You'll get really frustrated. But the 6Speed will probably blow you away once you strap on all the mods.

I'm counting on that.

What is weird, now that after all the months I have had the car in the AutoTrader I got no calls. Now that I have decided to trade it in and worked out a deal I have now recieved two calls and the one I just spoke to is highly interested and has financing already arranged (coming out to see it Saturday). Now my wife mentioned that I should reconsider the M Roadster but now that I have driven the 6-Speed I don't think I'll change my mind.

Granted, the two cars are not even comparable. One is a sporty mid-sized coupe. The other is a street legal go-kart. I still feel that I can't give up the room even though we have another passenger car. I'm pretty much dead-set on the 6-Speed and am looking forward to taking ownership. Then the wait for enough miles before parts go back on...

The best part is you are removing the weakest link in the CLS - the auto tranny - so you can go a bit further with modding with less worries.

Nitrous, twin-turbo. You know what you need to do!!!

Yea, I can only imagine the difference in performance you are feeling.
But I think the STOCK 6-Speed “out of the box” will probably feel like it has at least 75 percent of the power of your modified Auto.

When are you expecting delivery?

Take some pictures of the header disassembly.
It may help me on my DIY install when that day finally comes.

Thanks,
Shawn S

They sold the one I was looking at and are in the process of locating another. They expect to have one in the next few day if not the first of next week. But now if I sell my car I will need to re-negotiate.

No problem, I'll get the camera out for every step, start to finish.

Please do, particularly the A-Pipe. I want to get an idea of the differences and what it would take (if even possible) to modify the auto headers to fit the 6-Speed.

Thanks,

When Smitty posts the pictures tonight of the 6-Speed Headers you might be able to tell if yours can be modified to fit or not.

Scalbert,

Yes Yes! Please take many pics of the disassembly of the headers and the reassembly of the exhaust manifold. Including exactly what tools you used. I am itching to get mine on, but I want to DIM . I think the most important part for me is the exhaust manifold and header on the back side of the engine. I'm not sure what I will need to get that part on/off.

Thanks
