Wow! 20 HP From Cold Air Intake...

I was bored yesterday, so I bought the October "Honda Tuning" magazine where I noticed they did an air intake comparo. Page 60, REM Cold Air Intake...a gain of 20 HORSEPOWER and 5.3 lbs of torque! Amazing. I got to get me one of these!

Actually, I don't have the Ice Box yet. I'm going to have to do some more investigating on this REM unit after reading this.

I really hate to say never, but I gotta agree, 20 HP is not in the range of a CAI.. YMMV

It says...for the RSX. It doesn't say anything about the CL or TL. I guess the magazine is for Honda and Acura RSX. I guess we'll have to do some investigating at these companies:

AEM: Hey what's up ____ (magazine), we deposited $ xxxxx into your bank acct already. Please add another zero after the dyno number you got with our intake.
MAG: No problem AEM. It has been taken care of.

Consumer: wow, AEM, 20+ whp gain..me buy..me buy...

You mean AEM pappy, you keep saying REM. Actually AEM tested their cold air intake on a 2001 Cl-S and gains were 12.2 hp and 7.8 lb/ft of torque. It does help, but 20 seems inflated, like ford mustang's horsepower!

It's going to be a rip-off of the Comptech Ice Box design.

OK guys, if you notice the DC sports CAI did about the same. I remember there were a couple of people who dynoed the AEM CAI on the GS-R, and were receiving excellent hp from them. This is believable. Don't forget they already make a CAI for our cars already, and unfortunately we dont receive that much. Different cars react to mods differently. I'm sure people still cant belive us, when we tell them we get 30hp from just headers. Keep that in mind.

Reality check time...

ENOUGH -- this is just silly. Here is the BLURB as PUSHED over on AEM's site.

12.5 HP PEAK GAIN (NOT MAX GAIN AND NOT 20 HP)

"...As you can see on the comparison graph for the RSX Type-S, AEM's Cold Air system netted a peak gain of 12.5 hp and 5.5 lbs/ft of torque (we determine peak gains by taking the highest base number regardless of the rpm and the highest test number regardless of rpm and subtracting), with the biggest horsepower gain occurring at 7,250 rpm (12.6 hp) and the biggest torque gain occurring at 4,750 rpm (12.1 lbs/ft). The AEM CAS outperformed all of the intake systems throughout the powerband...."

AEM DID THE TESTING... NOT HONDATUNING...

He's talking about the acura-cl sticker, you didnt know, they add like 15 hp, and one on each side that gives you 30.

about the headers, isnt that 30 hp to the wheels, and like 35-40 hp figure, no one really believes us, but then again people have no clue the cl is fast, i know its not a sports car but it packs a punch.

it all depends what part you are putting it into what car. some parts are specifically made for a certain car therfore letting that part run more powerful and efficeint. but 20hp still sound too much who knows. technolgies these days

Pay for misinformation -- I think not...

Why bother reading the magazine when they can't even get the three-letters (A E M) of their host correct?????

IT's AEM NOT REM (commonly used as an abbreviation for "remark").

And, if I want to get information, would I want to get second hand information with proven errors (REM != AEM)

Are you really trying to say that "Honda Tuning" got it right and AEM doesn't even know how to spell their moniker?

AEM hosted intake comparison test link: http://www.aempower.com/dyno.htm

Excerpts:

"...The purpose of AEM's dyno day was to put to bed some inconsistencies regarding the testing of our intake system for the Acura RSX. We invited RSX owners and other performance enthusiasts to AEM's facility, so that they could become familiar with how we develop and manufacture our products. They also had the opportunity to have their questions answered first-hand by our engineering team. Representatives from three major enthusiast publications were present: Keith Buglewicz from Honda Tuning, Gary Castillo from Import Tuner, and Jimmy Louis from Super Street. Additionally, we had three representatives from American Honda Motor Co. attend the event, and representatives from Injen were present at R&D Dyno. After the tour of our facility, everyone went to R&D Dyno for the shootout portion of the day...."

"... DYNO DAY TESTING RESULTS

We tested a base model RSX and Type-S RSX with both our top-of-the-line CASs and economy Short Rams, Injen's Short Rams, and the factory air boxes for baseline numbers.

The two vehicles we used for testing were brought to us earlier in the week so that we could relocate the windshield washer fluid reservoir to allow for quicker installation of the CASs during testing. The vehicles were given back to their respective owners a couple of days prior to the event with the factory air box installed.

We tested the RSX base model first in stock configuration to create a baseline, then tested the Injen Short Ram, then the AEM Short Ram, and finally the AEM Cold Air System, using the methods described above. AEM technicians performed all of the installation procedures, in plain view for everyone to witness. All of the systems were installed with the vehicles still strapped to the dyno, without relocating or moving any of the fans. We used the same testing procedure for the Type-S model.

The first eight dyno sheets show that we acquired three consistent runs for each testing configuration. One thing that we would like to point out is that these results were also consistent for the 8 or 10 RSX club members who tested their vehicles independently after the shootout was completed. We had multiple AEM-equipped RSX Type-Ss break 180 hp...."

The AEM CAS outperformed all of the intake systems throughout the powerband.

AEM's Short Ram System had a peak gain of 4.6 hp and 3.9 lbs/ft of torque, with the biggest horsepower and torque gains occurring at 6,750 rpm (8.3 hp and 6.5 lbs/ft). From 4,250 rpm to 8,000 rpm there was a 4-8 hp gain with AEM's Short Ram. Keep in mind that this is our economy intake system. We make the Cold Air Intake system for those who want the ultimate performance.

Injen's intake system made a peak gain of 7.7 hp and 2.7 lbs/ft of torque, with the biggest horsepower and torque gains occurring at 7,250 rpm (8.2 hp and 5.9 lbs/ft). Although Injen did have a higher peak number at a higher rpm, the AEM Short Ram performed better from 3,500 to 7,000 rpm...."

The writer clearly “muffed” the numbers and couldn't even manage to get the host's name correct. Why would anyone want to pay for second-hand misinformation?

REM == RES from the darkside (come over to the darkside for more HP)...
