wiper blade trick

Alrite, here is my contribution to the acl forum.. hehe
i am not sure if this has been posted or suggested before..

When you feel your wiper blades are about to crap out on you, like not wiping properly, just take the blades down and then use 800 wet sand paper to resurface the rubber. I read this trick somewhere else, and tried myself. It works fine, i just have to continue sanding the rubber blade to get it work like a new one ! perhaps a 600 would work better, i guess this is kind of trial and error. hope this helps.

You dont even need wet sand paper. Just take some windex to them and clean them down til the towel or sheet is not dirty anymore. They work like new.... Applying some rainx doesnt hurt either....

Yeah just cleaning them does the trick for me too. They just get grimey. I usually do mine while I'm filling the tank at the gas station. Silicone spray seems to work well also.

Rain-X

Is there a rubber shortage going on? Are 24" and 18" wiper refills so rare that they need to be reconditioned with sandpaper? Are you just looking to become a more involved car owner?
I recommend Rain-X. With this stuff, you won't need wipers so much anymore. Just follow the directions and watch rain drops vaporize on your windscreen! It's very effective, and it will also help keep your windscreen from becoming too scratched from all the sand which is now embedded in your refurbished wipers....

After I treat my windshiels with Rain-X, I then put some on a paper towel and run the winper blades through that...

Well, perhaps its not so much of a cost factor or supply of blades in the market, maybe its more efficient use of our resources? I have always just changed the entire thing, that comes with the partial metal arm. Anyways, i thought its not very environmental considering the resource thats wasted.
I suppose i could just replace the refill, but its kind of a hassle. So i came across this tip from some other forum.

About rain-X, i have seen my friend put similar product on his windshield, and he regreted for some reason i forgot. Maybe it wasn't rain-X, but i just don't feel like puting anything chemical on the windshield.

So for you changers, this is just a environmental friendly tip, make more use out of resources. In our society today, people just throw away things because its so cheap to replace that they are too lazy to do something about it. The real cost lies in the disposal of these waste, not the cost of producing them.

and tosh, i wonder how much damage the 800 sandpaper sand can do to my windshield, we will see

I think good 800 grit wet/dry sandpaper might cost more than the new wipers anyway

I think cleaning the wipers now and then is a good idea. Cheaper and quicker than getting new blades. I do it whenever I have to drive any distance in a rain. Not because I'm cheap or a conservationist but it's a lot more handy than keeping new blades on hand for every time it rains. I just like the "like new" performance of wiper blades that are kept clean.

On that note, when you're cleaning the windows, take a little dish soap and "wax" the inner windshield. When you get a haze, wipe it clean. That will help prevent windshield fogging.

They make a wax???

I use Rain-X frequently, but I hate applying the shit. You really have to use some muscle to get all the product off the windshield, or it'll leave a film.

Is this 'wax' easier to apply? Accu-View makes something similar to Rain-X, although it's applied much more like Windex. Easy on, easy off. However, it doesn't last nearly as long, nor does it do as good of a job as Rain-X.

Here's another related question. What's the best way to get wax and road film off of the windshield? I've tried just about everything (windex and the like and glass cleaner sprays) but I always have a film (when it rains) and can see water beeding on the windshield.

Thanks!

I use Rain-X on my windshield, and have the Rain-X brand wipers. They work really good, but since i rarely have to use them, i dont enjoy them as much as i should.
