Winter Season Killer
Hey,
To all the folks driving Auto CLS....for how much time do you have to warm the car up before putting it in D-drive. And also if you don't heat it up for long enough what does it do?
I have noticed if i dont heat the car up for atleast a good of 10 and i put it in drive it won't move but once its heated its all good.
IS THAT A CASE WITH YOU GUYS AS WELL!!!!!PLEASE SUGGEST IF THATS ONLY ME....
thanks in advance....

The most I ever spent warming up my car is probably 2 minutes in the winter season.
The only problem I ever had was that some of the LEDs on the dash were a little messed up. Like my parking brake was completely released, but the brake light was still on. I double checked my brake and everything, the light just went off on it's own a little while later...

OP, if its cold out and I start it up and drive away, the first shift from first to second is jerkey. If I let it warm about 5 mins its smooth. Never heard of it not moving at all...
I am saying this in the nicest possible way... shut the fuck up.

Its always the simplest that I forget about if that happened to me I would just it was going to cost $1500 for a new tranny I would have never thought to check it
Thats what these forums are good (getting a differnt perpspective on the situation)

weird i actually dont warm up my car at all, and im toronto canada. i just drive slow for about a block or 2 and then its warm enough to crank the heat. Just drive under 2000rpm till your engine warms up
just saw this now, so ill just add...but yeah, my car sucks and got noticably worse this winter if i dont warm up my car.
I was driving and noticed a big jerk from 1-2 and also a small grinding noise in the transmission...i was about to trade in my car b/c i was like wtf. Now in this chicago winter, I wont go anywhere until my car warms up for at least 5 minutes. 5 minutes seems to be when my temperature meter finally warms up past "c". as soon as i hit that level, i have extremely smooth shifting.
my brother's 2 cents is that "Luigi, your car is getting old, it isn't what it used to be. let the thing warm up."
its true...

yeah i hate starting up a car in the cold weather and driving it. things are creakin and crackin, rattles, engine sounds are louder, some lights are not workin etc.
the only car that felt "normal" starting up in extremely cold weather was a bmw 3 series, prolly b/c it had very good build quality.
wonder how much they warm up these airliners and all their systems that have to fly in extremely cold weather.

if you have a handbook then you can read that Acura says it doesnt need more than 1 minute to warm up and that it warms up quicker under load i.e. driving
i think one condition that may affect the clunky 1st-2nd could be if the car was originally purchased and owned for awhile in warmer climates then moved to a colder area. Ive heard that ppl just put 100% water in their radiators in the southern climates and that when brought up north it should have a radiator flush and filled with the correct amount of coolant/water mix.

If i just turn the car on and leave it running it will take like 12-15 min before hot air blows and temp gauge goes up where as if i get in start it and drive it will tale 5-6 min before hot air blows and temp guage goes up.
I remember my car was super jerky when it was in the cold mornings or nights. Shifting from Park to Reverse it was jerky...same when shifting from 1st to 2nd to 3rd. Happened after I had the tranny replaced too.
Some cars tend to be sensitive during cold times and will shift hard between gears. It doesn't mean it's going to break though.

Even my 6-spd sucks in the cold... 1-2 shifts are really hard, the transmission is notchy as hell for the first 15 minutes or so...
Winter is really hard on cars, not much you can do about it.
It was -22 Celsius Here this morning - about -10-15F I believe... sucks

i let my CL-S heat up for at least 4-5 minutes. I think I know what happens to a car if you don't let it heat up for a few minutes. The engine will break down and that will cause more problems. It's better to be safe than sorry, so I'd say at least 4-5. That's good, at least some of you all heat it up for a bit.
