Wilwood Brakes Info

Chemmech & I (more him than I ) swapped our brake systems today (my wilwoods on the CLS with his stock TLS system).

With stock rims, the front 13" rotor/caliper combo fit with a 6mm spacer. However, we also found that the rear disks are different on the TL vs CL. The CLS has a deeper hub than the TLS.

10 hour drive, wheh I gotta sleep. Here's just a few words about the brakes, the difference in weight really helps the cars handling and cornering alot. I've driven BMW's before and the brake upgrade actually changed the performance of the car to be similar to the BMW (very little rebound in the front end). I still have to turn the rotors (For Free), but the stopping power of the 6 piston caliper is really great! No noticeable fade either. The 13" rotors will fit the stock 17" rim with 6mm spacers.

Maybe a dumb question. What offset works with these brake systems without spacers?

CLSter - It depends on the wheel design and offset. I have 18x7.5" Tantrums +42mm and there is plenty of clearance.

Mike - Didnt have time to. The swap took quite some time b/c of two small screws, that hold the rotor on the hub, didnt want to come out. We had to drill them out.

I'm gonna have the rotors turned this morning, lot of high spots. I'll get some pics up soon. Also, I have to go get a bunch of those hub screws.

Chemmech...do you need cross-drilled rotors for the rear? I have a set of rear Powerstop rotors for the TL I'm trying to get rid of

1gCL, I'm out of mod funds again for awhile . The rotors are much better since they've been turned Cameras out of battery power, so I'll get pictures alittle later on. I'm not gonna push the brakes hard until I get the pad and rotor bedded (broken in). I'll give a write up on performance later throuhg this thread. Ronnie, sell the car yet? Good luck! One things for sure about the setup, the 6 piston calipers can provide extreme prssure to the rotors, a good thing. Oh yeah, the guys at my local rotor shop thought my rotors were for a truck, because they are soo big, they hadn't seen rotors like these before .

I know this won't help you now but if you put the lug nuts on and torque them down on the rotor those screws should come out pretty easily.

Oh man! That would have made things sooo much easier! Thanks ChadT, this will make things easier in the future. My impact driver kept stripping the screws, very frustrating . Cheap Proto tool.

Yeah I discovered this little trick after stripping 3 of 4 on my old Prelude. Put the lugs on and you could almost turn them by hand.

Hey Ronnie, I think my gas mileage is improving! Has your mileage gone down on the CL since swapping the rotors? Oops forgot, you probably only drive the Mercedes now.

Yea, I pointed out the rear rotors and he liked the idea of going aftermarket...he's planning on getting matching rotors for the fronts.

And yes, I dont drive the CLS much...im only getting 20mpg on the benz cuz its so hard not to get on it.
