Why two speed sensors? Nav? Backup?

Just curious if anyone knows... I was reading through the Helm Manual (because we all know how exciting this is), and I noticed there are two speeds sensors in the tranny. Main Shaft speed sensor and Counter Shaft speed sensor. Is one simply redundant to backup the other? Is one for Navigation?

I was told taht the speedometer and odometer both operate on different speed sensors. Not sure the reason why. My odometer is dead on but my speedometer is 8% high.

Navi could be a good guess. It may one for forward and one for reverse.

Doubt it - Two speed sensors regardless of NAV. Nav may use one but that's not the primary reason for the design,

Well just for the hell of it I disconnected one of the sensors and drove for a little... no change, both ODO and SPEEDO worked but it threw up a check engine light. I did not like that so I plugged it back in. My guess... redundant sensor? Oh, I didn't try reverse or disconnecting the other sensor. Who cares anyway, right :o
