why is my cl typeS is slower then a 99 tl
why is my cl typeS is slower then a 99 tl
okie soo tonight i decide to race a friend 99 tl,and off the line he beat me until where it was like 80 or so,where i start to slowly cut off from his car,and my is a cl type-s with cai,and his has exhuast, headers, and intake, soo im just wondering does this seem normal??,cuz after all my is a type-s it can be really that slow
IMHO, his mods should put him up to par with you... I don't see what's so shocking about your finding. An exhaust on a non Type S TL will give him a lot more gains than us CL-Sers are used to seeing, cause the stock TL/CL exhaust doesn't breathe as well as ours. So estimate 10 crank hp for that, 30 or so for the headers, and 5 more for the intake and you're at 225+10+30+5 = 270hp ... which sounds about right to me.

I was running 1/4s with I/H and I was running low 15s when my IMRC was busted. I knew something had to be wrong ... mrsteve noticed that my actuator was just GONE!
With all these people with broken actuators on the board. I wonder how many people on the road have Type S's with broken actuators that have no idea. They're pretty much losing their extra 35hp but it doesn't throw a check engine lights or anything. Most dealerships are clueless as to what it even is. I bet this is how a lot of people on other forums with slower cars "smoked" a TL-S or CL-S on the road.
I posted a similar post a few weeks ago and I had my acutator checked out during a routing maintenance. The service guy said they checked it and it was ok. I didn't get a real good feeling that they checked it since he sort of just brushed it off. I'm going to take it to another dealership to have it checked again.
The car is just too slow to be a Type S with 260 HP. Seems like the Corolla I'm driving while on business this week is quicker. Can't stand it. There must be something wrong.

1, Learn how to gate shift.
2. VSA off
3. Learn how to drive.
4. Install titanium bearings on the IMRC
5. Upgrade the input to the flux capacitor (front and rear)
6. Send some money to Zephyr for the RES

If you have a friend, you can have him step on the gas in the car while you look at it from the engine bay.
If you don't know where the actuator is, or what it looks like when its opening/closing then look at the link I posted above to the CL FAQ. It has pics and a video of the actuator.
yeah it was the actuator,it was busted, when i tested it out today, soo i took it over to acura and they confirm it was broken too,soo they order a new part and gonna install it next tuesday, surprising its not that much for it,only 120 plus 85 dollar labor
Are you guys on crack?? The TL was modded with headers/intake/exhaust to an almost stock CLS! Not to mention the CLS pulled on the TL towards the end. For pete's sake its not like he has a porsche vs. a modded metro. The TL is probably pushing close to 245-255 crank vs. 265-275 for the CLS and the CLS is slightly heavier (3510 vs. 3447)...even moreso if you consider the mods (headers are much lighter than the stock manifold as is the intake vs the stock airbox). Most who have raced a CL or TL in a CLS/TLS can concede that the cars are relatively even off the line and it isn't really until higher speeds that the S shines over the P.
well tru,but its not that,he actually beat me through out the whole race up until i got into 5th gear where i pulled on him, cause his tl only has 4 gear, but from 1st thru 4th he was winning

More like 20 HP less with it busted...

Screw it, I'm doing it today. I want to know if I'm losing the extra power that I paid for.

Check it once in a while (once a month perhaps). Mine is fine, but I just keep checking it to make sure...
The speed where it engages may be a bit different depending on tach, etc...

I'm sorry, but am I the only one who finds this comment strange.
And like some have said before, the two cars are fairly evenly matched so you're not gonna destroy him in a race
Yeah, he shouldn't destroy him, but he definitely shouldn't lose, the tl-p doesn't get the good hp increase with the headers, and i doubt it would get 10hp from exhaust. I would guess that when this guy gets his actuator fixed and uses the gates to race, and never uses 5th gear, he should win atleast by 3 carlengths up to 80mph.

It will make close to 25 HP on a 99 TL and exhaust will give you just a little over 5+ HP. The 99 TL and non Type-S models have very restrictive exhaust.
Some TL-P owners have noticed a nice difference just changing the mufflers to TYPE-S mufflers.
