what Allout said, check actuator. Is your car bogging when you go WOT? maybe bad fuel pump? dirty intake or dirty injectors?

IMHO, his mods should put him up to par with you... I don't see what's so shocking about your finding. An exhaust on a non Type S TL will give him a lot more gains than us CL-Sers are used to seeing, cause the stock TL/CL exhaust doesn't breathe as well as ours. So estimate 10 crank hp for that, 30 or so for the headers, and 5 more for the intake and you're at 225+10+30+5 = 270hp ... which sounds about right to me.

Mod your car

Also the 99 has a 4-speed auto, probably helps.

uhhhh, headers wont make 30whp on a tl-p... and and aftermarket exhaust wont give them 10whp either.. and probably not even at the crank (for both). so yea, get your car checked out.

My mom has a 2001 TL, and the car is way faster than my CL as well. IT accelerates quicker than the CL. People think im crazy, but the difference is obvious

I agree, probably the IMRC Actuator.

Here's a link for more information : http://www.geocities.com/gamesmgr/chod/acura/#Driving6

I was running 1/4s with I/H and I was running low 15s when my IMRC was busted. I knew something had to be wrong ... mrsteve noticed that my actuator was just GONE!

With all these people with broken actuators on the board. I wonder how many people on the road have Type S's with broken actuators that have no idea. They're pretty much losing their extra 35hp but it doesn't throw a check engine lights or anything. Most dealerships are clueless as to what it even is. I bet this is how a lot of people on other forums with slower cars "smoked" a TL-S or CL-S on the road.

Check the FAQ page...I posted my IMRC story a long time ago. My stopped working and my CL-S became a CL-P.

I posted a similar post a few weeks ago and I had my acutator checked out during a routing maintenance. The service guy said they checked it and it was ok. I didn't get a real good feeling that they checked it since he sort of just brushed it off. I'm going to take it to another dealership to have it checked again.

The car is just too slow to be a Type S with 260 HP. Seems like the Corolla I'm driving while on business this week is quicker. Can't stand it. There must be something wrong.

1, Learn how to gate shift.

2. VSA off

3. Learn how to drive.

4. Install titanium bearings on the IMRC

5. Upgrade the input to the flux capacitor (front and rear)

6. Send some money to Zephyr for the RES

You can check it yourself. I don't recall where it is, but there should be a throttle sensor that you can pull on to give the car some gas. With the car in PARK of course, throttle it up and watch the Actuator. If at ~4100rpms you see it move to the open position then you know its working. After you let off the throttle it should move back to the closed position.

If you have a friend, you can have him step on the gas in the car while you look at it from the engine bay.

If you don't know where the actuator is, or what it looks like when its opening/closing then look at the link I posted above to the CL FAQ. It has pics and a video of the actuator.

Are you guys on crack?? The TL was modded with headers/intake/exhaust to an almost stock CLS! Not to mention the CLS pulled on the TL towards the end. For pete's sake its not like he has a porsche vs. a modded metro. The TL is probably pushing close to 245-255 crank vs. 265-275 for the CLS and the CLS is slightly heavier (3510 vs. 3447)...even moreso if you consider the mods (headers are much lighter than the stock manifold as is the intake vs the stock airbox). Most who have raced a CL or TL in a CLS/TLS can concede that the cars are relatively even off the line and it isn't really until higher speeds that the S shines over the P.

A modded J32A1 is kind of up there with a relatively stock J32A2. Who had the better launch? In races from a stop, it's all in the launch.

I it is normal, you are not going to pulled a few cars of a regular TL. I would say maybe one car or so till 80mph. I think your type S emblem is weighing your car down.

Man, all this talk about the IMRC going out, I should check mine.

Screw it, I'm doing it today. I want to know if I'm losing the extra power that I paid for.

Liquice, thanks. I'll check it.

RH868, glad you found the problem. I'm motivated to get mine checked again either myself or the dealership.

Check it once in a while (once a month perhaps). Mine is fine, but I just keep checking it to make sure...

The speed where it engages may be a bit different depending on tach, etc...

Do you have a 6-speed? Cause if you don't why the hell are you putting it in 5th in the race, its an Over-Drive gear, not good for racing. Even 4th sucks and at that point your going 120 mph when it kicks in.

I'm sorry, but am I the only one who finds this comment strange.

And like some have said before, the two cars are fairly evenly matched so you're not gonna destroy him in a race

Yeah, he shouldn't destroy him, but he definitely shouldn't lose, the tl-p doesn't get the good hp increase with the headers, and i doubt it would get 10hp from exhaust. I would guess that when this guy gets his actuator fixed and uses the gates to race, and never uses 5th gear, he should win atleast by 3 carlengths up to 80mph.

It will make close to 25 HP on a 99 TL and exhaust will give you just a little over 5+ HP. The 99 TL and non Type-S models have very restrictive exhaust.

Some TL-P owners have noticed a nice difference just changing the mufflers to TYPE-S mufflers.

I'm with you on this one, mclaren. Why is he in 5th gear at 80mph? In the auto 5 speed you should still be in 3rd and pulling hard at 80mph. You should get above/or about 100 (if memory serves me right- been a long time since I hit 120) before shifting to 4th. In 4th the CL becomes a dog until about 110-115 or so before it starts picking up again, a little. Unless you have a 6 speed (even then I don't see how you could be in 5th at 80), I don't think you're doing things right.
