Cars are designed to accomodate as many buyers as possible .You and I know that you can get away with a lot less wheel gap but you and I know how to drive our cars so that bottoming out is not an issue .But we and this includes all of the forum membership are part of a group of people called "auto enthusiasts" We take better care of our cars and have far more interest but we are also a small group of people .Most people just get in and drive they do not want to know about bottoming out or awesome handling .That is the curse of auto enthusiasts ,we are at the mercy of the masses .We are doomed to usually get stuck buying cars with a lot of potential but we need to spend some money to get the potential out .Auto Manufacturers love enthusiasts but sadly we are a minority and as such not the bread and butter of a car makers dinner .We are that little piece of pie you get as dessert .Good but usually way too small .

Honda should've lowered the Type-S at least a bit. Its suspension is tighter anyways.

You must have gotten a CL with the "off-road" package.

The CL's gap is small compared to some other cars I had, & looked at. The Chrysler 300M I had before, I could sleep in that gap.
