No, and NO VTEC on the 1st gen. RL........as it is NOT a sporty or race car ! It is a lux cruiser !

The new RL most definitely has VTEC and it also has a bypass valve actuator aka IMRC

28K miles & mine still works fine. 18K miles on the 02 I had & that didn't fail either.

back to the thread question. I've owned 2 6MT CLs and drove a friend's 04 TL 6MT. It didn't seem any faster to me.

Good question as to what models have it or not ! I also have a 2005 MDX with a 265 hp VTEC engine and wonder if it has an actuator......ummmmmmmm...
However I don't drive it (MDX) like the CL Type S.......it really pulls from a start, once she hits 80 not a whole lot of pull as its HEAVY, but decent from a start for 4500 lbs.....My RL is 200 lbs heavier than the MDX !!!!!!

Besided I don't like to go too much over 80 in the MDX esp with many passengers and luggage........

Well that being confirmed.....trust ME, if it fails on the MDX I WOULD notice it immediatley being a 4,500 lb vehicle !
Thanks for confirming that, but MDX: Canadian
CL: Ohio American
Perhaps Acura changed supplier company to make this part better......just a thought as its not been a complaint on the MDX board I frequently visit....

It is a completely different design on the J35 than on the J32A2. Don't fret.

So if you do hear VTEC engage, does that mean the IMRC is functioning properly??

VTEC and IMRC have nothing to do with each other.

i found the same thing, my friend just bought an 05 6 speed, and it feels sluggish compared to my 03 six speed. couldn't even get the tires to break loose in second, on mine i can in 3rd-some times 4th but not often

I must not shift hard enough because I rarely break the tires loose in the new 6-speed.

i drove my buddies 04 tl and the pedal is very touchy. u tap on it, and it goes, where as our cars you have to lay your foot down. I didnt think it felt any quicker, and that was before i installed the headers.

So i got my car back last night after having them replace the bypass valve actuator and all I can say is DAMN!!! After owning this car for 3 months with a broken actuator its like having a whole new car. The diffrence in acceleration is amazing, when it was broken there was no torque steer, now its crazy. I was kinda disapointed before with the acceleration of the car but now i am fully aware of the capabilities of the cl-s. I can actually hear the vtec kicking in now too, sounds nice. Thanks for the help guys Oh and my cl-s is definatly faster then the TL now!

I forgot about how the IMRC works to make so much power. This explains why I see so many Type-S' in the slower lanes on the freeway, I guess their IMRC's are out.

I wonder?????????....Was a broken IMRC the reason why Car & Drivers test of Comptechs CLS had bad performance numbers?

I had an 05 TL over the weekend when my Cl was serviced and I ran between 15.1 & 15.3 on my Gtech performance meter. My CL typically runs a 15.1 but the TL did feel faster in mid range passing.

From a standing start the CL is definitely quicker.

I had an A-spec'ed 2005 TL automatic on loan from my dealer for 5 days last week while my 03 CLS 6 speed was being worked on. The TL was about as quick as my wife's 2004 Maxima (which does a 6.8 second 0-60) but it was very slightly less maneuverable than the Maxima. The maxima rides a little stiffer and is more responsive as a result.

However, when I got back into my CLS 6-speed 5 days later, I immediately felt a big difference. The CLS is much more aggressive and responsive than I had become accustomed to over my 5 days with the TL. It also sounds more throaty and aggressive when I get on it. (It is bone stock by the way--no headers or ice boxes, etc.).

Had I had a TL 6-speed (instead of the automatic) the difference would have been less noticable, but Motorweek shows the 2004 TL 6-speed still being almost a half second slower to 60 than the 2003 CLS 6-speed (the TL 0-60 time was 6.3 seconds; the CLS's 5.9 seconds).

btw there was a design change in the acctuator motor i think as early as 2002 placing the motor right by the PS pump, instead of near the fire wall...a side note 99.9 of all failed acctuators are not acctually bad but instead atleast one if not more teeth have broken off the drive gear in the motor...ive had mine apart twice and most rescently shimmed the gear so that it's situated where there are still teeth on the gear

just looking at some other stuff in the same are both the TL and the RL have two totally different intake manifolds...the rl looking the most different, and both have moved the IAT sensor nearer to the throttle body...oh ya wonder whats different about the RL injectors? how do we get specs instead of part numbers?

What kind of tires do you have? On the stockers I can get rubber in 3rd, but with the dr's i can barely get any spin from a stop even with a hard launch. Plus the softer the compund the less they will squeal. When I do a burnout in my mustang I cant hear the tires at all.
