Why do many auto makers offer incentives?

Why dont they just lower the price? Instead of jacking it up just to add rebates and other discounts.

Is it for the perception of a good deal or what?

A price rollback is not likely this is after all not Walmart we are talking about here .Car makers establish a price for a car but the market place fluctuates so the price of the car includes some room for movement .If the market sucks they can add "incentives" and still make a profit .Once the market stabilizes then they go back to what the market will bear .These guys are out to make money just as all of you are they just happen to deal in the worlds favorite playtoy .It is an expensive playtoy so the price has some horsetradin room in it .Simple as that .

It's the auto makers way of dealing with market fluctuations.

Times are tough all over, mang.
