i think it's okay, but revving it in neutral then dropping to D5 isn't a good idea

I haven't heard of this, but I'd be interested in hearing an explanation. I can't imagine why it would be bad. Neutral is neutral... or so one would think. Now, going from drive to neutral while the car is running and in motion - I've heard that's bad. And that at least seems plausible. But just rolling in Neutral??? Big deal?

Oh speaking of neutral, its not bad to leave it in neutral while at a light right?? Cause sometimes I do that, put it into neutral so I just hang, but then I put it into drive and go, no revving first of course.

You asked a question that I couldn't answer.....so I called my friend at Jeep. He said that it's ok for short distances but not long periods on on ANY tranny (or Transfer Case for that matter) Why?

Both tranny types have a main output seal that is actually cooled by viscous fluid. If you tow for long distances, the seal will eventually fail a long time "down the road" due to heat-induced breakdown.

Is he right?

I'm probably the oldest one here, but YEARS ago I was told that coasting in neutral was bad for the transmission because the transmission fluid heats up and breaks down the viscosity? This was before overdrive etc.- just had D, 1 and 2. Not sure if this still applies today. Don't we have any mechanics out there?
