Thanks to everyone who wrote regarding switching from 20 to 30 weight oil. Seems like lots of forum members like the extra 'protection' of a little heavier oil.

Amsoil EO or Mobil1 ED filters,, both are submicron filters made to work with syn oil and extended drains.

I put Amsoil 5w30 this time, Mobil 1 before that. I will be going back to Mobil 1 my next oil change. I don't feel like paying extra for Amsoil, Mobil1 is good enough for my once a year oil change (since I drive 6-7K miles a year)

BTN: I Use Castro Synthetic and KN filter Also sometimes for my other cars i Use Mobil with Mobil filter

you will be suprised mobil syn is that good. i read here that a ziner works for a oil refinery and had is oil analysed at 7500 and it didn't show know signs of breakdown.

btw i switches to royal purple at 90k. i change at about 5-7k and oil still looks clean.

Saw an episode on Horsepower on Spike TV and they were dyno testing an engine using Royal Purple. They compared it to regular oil and just with the change to RP, they netted 8hp and 6 lbs. of torque. That's impressive in my books. RP ftw!

For turbo'd or SC setups, RP recommends the XPR synthetic oil. You probably still are able to use this in N/A motors but you'll be wasting $$$.

just a note about mobil1,,, only mobil 1 extended drain is PAO (synthetic) base stock tbn (total base number) of 12. the others are petro base stock TBN 8. Normal oil is TBN 7-8. The gov HAS ALLOWED Mobil, Castrol, Pensoil to label their petro base stock as synthetic.

IT BS becasue they are charging more for it and confusing the buying public. Only Amsoil PAO syn and mobile ED are TBN 12-13.

You can, but you will pay

You COULD use 5W-30 instead of 5W-20, but according to fueleconomy.org, it "can lower your gas millage by 1-1.5%". Which means, you are going to be paying extra 3-6 cents per /gallon.

i work at a quick lube and we go to these little interventions where they say synthetic is better than conventional. synthetics are man made, and they're engineered to work harder when it gets hot. when coming to oil, synthetics the best choice because of its superior protection against thermal breakdown and its high performance compatibility.

at least thats what the quaker state president had to say about it, since our contract is with quaker.

mobil 5w30 every time.

thats true, but not entirely. back in the 80's, GM said you should change your oil every 10,000 miles, but there are so many unspoken of stipulations. such as where you're driving and how you're driving. there's too much politics involved. when that statement was made by GM, the oil industry business dropped, and then they switched it back to the 3000 miles interval. better for our economy i guess.

its recommended every 3,000 miles for people who do a lot of stop-go driving, such as a commute car. Quaker analyzed a car that drove across the nation without a single oil change, and the oil was still good because almost all of it was freeway driving.

all in all, its really up to the drivers income, availability, and willingness to do the oil change. i do mines every 3000 miles. works for me since i work there and get half off synthetics.

conventional oil breaks down at a lower temperature then synthetics do, therefore reducing the sludge build up in the engine and increases performance. pretty simple.

Yes I sell Amsoil to my friends and naighbors,, therefore when I started testing my oil (when my cl was new) I used it to baseline what to tell people.,, I wanted a large safety buffer because they forget to change it and ususally go 12 -15k or one year,, I was making them come in (my home garage) for a filter change every 5k,, but now with the new sub-micron filters I can go 10-15k on the oil and filters.

I have a real job in the aeronutical engineering field and I use science to prove out claims,, Moble1 ED and Amsoil seem to always be on top of various independent SAE tests.

All who use syn need to do what they are personally comfortable with,,

Amsoil 0w30 $$8-9/qt
Amsoil sub-micon EO filter $$12-15

Mobil ED $$6-8/ qt
ED filter $$ 9-11

I don't use Mobil because they have been known to change there formulas,, well documented,, they also have been know to advertise changing syn every 3k,, you have to remember they have a 50 year supply of petro oil they need to sell

Amsoil make a living trying to get peaple to stop changing there oil so often..

ditto. fender4's right... too much politics, haha.

I went from 5w30 Mobile 1 to 10w30 when my blower was installed at 45K. I change it every 5K. It could probably go to 7.5K; however, when I replace it at 5K the oil is really black. Walmart usually has a 5 qt. package for around $23.75 before tax. I can't find the same deal for any less locally, even at CostCo.

The heat here in Florida is crazy hot during the summer months and the A/C is always cranked, so I run a little thicker. With 10w30 I consistently get 27-28 mpg on the highway at 75mph without boost. City mpg is always low because of stop/go traffic and frequent supercharger play My CLS-6 has around 96K now and this oil has kept it running strong and reliable. The goal is to get another 75K if possible

Yeah same here, 5-30w Castrol Syntec, I change every 5K miles, that way it's easy to remember when to do it. No issues yet.

5W-30 synthetic for me. Dad's cousins shop where I have it changed charges me around what normal oil costs for synthetic so there's no reason not to go with it.

ive been using mobile1 synthetic 5w-30 for all my vehicles, 02 ford explorer with more than 100k (runs like new- surprisingly on ford motor lol), my 01 cl, and 92 legend sedan (5spd, type II motor, over 130k miles)... all running without a single problem... i would say mobile 1 syn is way to go
