I'ld get the RES, then goto to walmart and buy a cheap detector....better something than nothing.

I see ppl still using the original escorts!

Well, That's silly.

If you get a cheap detector, let's say that its Ka band (most useful in FL) range is 1/2 of the V1. Even the most inaccurate test site gives the V1 25,000 feet for Ka detection. On a highway, going 90 MPH, that's 132 FPS and assuming the cop is stopped, it would give you 189 seconds of warning (3.15 minutes). Assuming the cop is going 85, that cuts the time roughly in half to 1.5 minutes. That's with the V1 - with el-cheapo, you get half that, or 45 seconds - perfect world.

Now take their results on a curve. 1000 feet - the cop is probably stopped. Same speed, you get 7.5 seconds. El cheapo gives you 3.75 - HARDLY enough time to jam the brakes - definitely not time to slow down enough to 70 (the posted limit on I-95, for example).

So - does a high-end detector make a difference? You better bet your ass it does.

And that's only half the story. I'll be brief:

Instant on radar is prevalent; it's almost the rule. Much of those precious seconds are radar-free silence. What does that mean? During your 45 seconds drive, 30-40 of those seconds the radar could be off, your radar detector unable to detect radar. This significantly decreases your range. If you don't have the maximum range from your radar detector, you can miss a significant radar event, and get caught in an instant-on situation.

I have a detector with a 4000 feet range, yours is 2000 feet. When 5000 feet away from radar, neither of us know radar is ahead. We both drive awhile. Next burst of radar comes while we are 2500 feet away from radar. I know; you don't. Next burst of radar comes at 500 feet away from radar; we're being clocked. I'm doing 65, you're doing 95.

I have V1. I do only use it at night, on HW when I am doing 20 miles trips, It's not hardwired too.

And do not be too much stupid doing a 95 in a 65 ALONE on an interstate HW at 6:00 AM on sunny Sunday morning! Same on Saturday night at 1:45 AM where cops are hunting for DWI drivers!!

Instant-on will get you, Having a V1 or not!

Guyz, he asked for a RES or V1.

I got a V1 and know it's priceless value in OFFENSIVE driving.

I was just responding to his comment on the expense since he has purchased alot of toys for his CL_S. And being Christmas (spending) and all.

I see alot of ppl using X/Y only detectors and the new cheapies should work better than the old ones. Well U would think...

Since the RES seems to be in limbo, a V1 purchase would satisfy driving needs sooner.

IMO V1 or cheapy: The trick is not to speed too fast when you're the only duck on the road. And don't slam on the brakes when U get tagged or the cop will assume U have a detector and were speeding.

I have to disagree with this part of the statement. Slamming on the brakes to get your speed down is better than getting caught speeding. I don't think the cops add digits to your speed caught on the radar gun because you were breaking excessively.

I've heard this before but I think it means don't attract attention that way. But if your detector is ring aloud and you're the target, you want to bring your speed down as quickly as you possibly can; safely. You can't beat the radar alone, but you can beat the operator+reaction time+radar.

I agree with what ur saying too, kensteele. I guess if u drive "like u stole it" at least your ticket wont say what speed u were doing.

I got tagged Sunday Night with instant-on on an unlit and empty freeway, but I was only doing 72 on a 65. With my luck, if I tapped on my brakes, he/she would have probably pulled me over cause it was a slow night and maybe to checkout a CL_S I just don't wanna give them a reason to. It's been 17yrs since my last ticket. I'ld probably cry like a gurl, if I gotten one.

I got the Escort 8500 (questionably, second banana to the V1) for 250 bucks brand new, factory sealed on ebay.

See radartest.com and speedzones.com and formulate an opinion of your own as to whether to buy a V1 or escort 8500.

ok, now I'm ready to take on any anti-Escort flames.

No one should flame you. The root of V1 is CinncinatiMicrowave.
Both are well respected detectors.
