When is the best time to shift?

When you are running a 1/4 mile at what RPM range is it best to shift?

I know you don't believe me... but I did the calcs from Mike's dyno and the NHRA calc said 7000 RPM.

In all honesty, I didn't run input data past 7000 rpm.

I'll give you the link, and you can re-enter the data as you please...

Toker,

I got my best times by running right into the red, the guage seemed to indicate around 7200 ... i'm not sure if there is more power up there, or if you gain by having a higher rpm entry in the next gear...

WebToker,

Shift at 6900-7000. That's what I did to obtain those times that I posted a while back at the track. Anything above that and you'll hit the rev-limiter/fuel cutoff...well at least on my car that's what happened.

When I'm using 1->2->d3 I move the shift at 6850 and if I get it just right it actually shifts right around 7000~7100. but if u shift it at 6900 then the fuel cutt off comes on. Very tricky but practice makes perfect.

I always thought that the best time to shift was at the peak hp point, or soon after. I'm no pro though, that's for sure.

what does it mean when you shift, usually from 2nd to 3rd, you hear a chirping noise...not from the tires though.

That's what happens when your on a slick surface and shift at high RPMs. It will also do it when going uphill and shifting at high RPMs. I usually get a chirp on takeoff and at the 1>2 shift, but not very often from 2>3.

Are you sure about that one?

Where is the "chirping" coming from?

I guess it could be from 1st to 2nd...but it really doesn't sound like my tires are making that kinda noise. I guess it's normal though to have our cars *chirp*. Just making sure there wasn't anything else wrong with it.

It's very normal if you're shifting near redline. If you're shifting at low RPMs and hear a chirping noise, then I'd worry.

The stock tires will make a "chirp" like sound without to much "help" on paint strips and concrete roads. They will also make chirping sounds from 1st to 2nd on slippery surfaces.

If you are not really "stepping" on it, and the surface looks really rough, like sandpaper, there is something funny going on.

The stock tires chirp, squeak, and squeal like little piggies, depending on the road surface.
