What's the proper way to clean AEM intake?

I've tried to search this and found some threads with this topic. But I haven't found any thread with any how-to. How should I clean my aem intake? and how often does it have to be done? mine has been about 12k.

you should clean the intake every 3,000 miles. to clean the intake you should purchase the k&n air filter cleaning kit. you can find it @ your local auto retail store. ie pep boys. now get out there and clean that filter because your being robbed of HP and that thing is probably SO DAMN DIRTY!! GL!

You don't need to clean it every 3k miles. I checked mine at about 6k, and it was still decently clean.

Keep in mind that when it's freshly cleaned and lubricated, high-flowing capacity filters such as K&N and AEM tend to let more dirt in. They need some amount of dirt on the filter to filter effectively. By cleaning too often, you're letting too much dirt/debris in.

I would say every 7-8k miles, but that's just me.

That's the same principle as oil filters, people who change them too often are not keeping the engine as clean.

That said, it does depend on where you live! If you live in a dustier climate, then clean it more often- otherwise, once every six months is good...it's pretty well protected by being inside the fender

I see no necessity for cleaning it so often. The filtering element does a good job WHEN it gets dirty versus very clean. My VW, I cleaned my K&N filter element every 30K, no problems or decrease in gas mileage or power.
