Whats a good summer tire thats reasonably priced

Im gonna go wider than the tires I have now which are 225/40 and 255/35 18

I want to go with 235/40 and 265/35 respectively

the only problem is that the rear might be too wide for the car so I need a tire that will have a small tread width

also who knows of a tire with the wheel protector...I know my Michelin Pilot A/S has one but dont want to spend too much just for the summer

all Im looking for is a tire that will fit the wheels better and no be too wide that may cause rubbing

so far Ive been looking at Pirelli Pzero nero that are on sale right now

been working with Cy at Tirerack and he recommends Dunlops 9000 I just never liked Dunlops.

I know you guys that go throuhg tires can give some insight

Zapata I was looking at those till I read this and some other similar reviews

Vehicle: 1999 Mercedes-Benz CLK430
Location: Belmont, CA
Driving Style: Spirited
Miles driven on tires: 11,000 Driving Condition: Combined Highway/City
Reviewer's Overall Ratings: 6.88 out of 10
Review Submitted: 2004-01-22

My last tires were the Kumho Ecsta 712. These Yokos have me driving 10 mph slower on the highway in turns. They scare me. They are so noisy that it is distracting, at best.

please..............it's a high performance summer tire. You do have more noise than your standard tire but nothing like this guy is talking about. It's perfect for the type of use you want.

Scrib those look great but at $186 for the fronts and $238 for the rears....mmmm but for that price I would of gone with Potenzas S03

the Pirelli Pzero nero are $179 front and $153 for the rears so thats what Im looking at now just dont really know about these tires

Lou... The Eagle F1 are the best high performance tire going. Pricey yes, but they are the BEST. Rated much better than the S0-3.

They'll be my next tire.

Zapata does those tires look wide for their sizes cause for the rears at 265/35 tread width is 10.2 inches on a 9.5 inch rim

that would probalbly cause rubbing even in the 255/35 tread width is 9.8 inches its a wide tire for its sizes which is good but not for what i need it for

thanks for the input tho

There was an issue of Consumer Reports that reviewed all these and the clear winner was the Eagle F1.

I'll see if I can dig up the thread.

Consumer Reports -- 11/03

Results of testing max-performance/high-performance testing in dry and wet conditions. Noise, hydroplaning, and price were also factored in. The top three picks had no poor or fair ratings in any category.

The Toyo T1-S and Goodyear Eagle F1 (similar tread patterns were their recommended choices. The Goodyear's had better braking performance. The Toyos had better handling characteristics. I belive the size tested was 215/45-17.

(#1) 19 Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 $135
(#2) 20 Toyo Proxes T1-S $190
(#3) 21 Continental ContiSportContact 2 $170
(#4) 22 Michelin Pilot Sport $180
(#5) 23 Dunlop SP Sport 9000 $140
(#6) 24 Pirelli PZero Nero $140
(#7) 25 Bridgestone Potenza S-03 Pole Position $180
(#8) 26 Hankook Ventus Sport K104 $115
(#9) 27 Yokohama AVS ES100 $120
(#10)28 BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW $145
(#11)29 Firestone Firehawk SZ50 EP $175
(#12)30 Kumho ECSTA Supra 712 $125
(#13)31 Sumitomo HTRZ II $120

Now that blows...

S0-3s are nice too... But damn. The Eagle F1 was my pick.

I have the Pilot Sports now and I like them. But they're insanely pricey compared to other tires like the Eagle F1s and S0-3s...

Im trying locally which usually is more expensive...most likely I'll just wait instead of regretting it afterwards

the S03 are great but in the 265 the tread width is too wide 9.7 which may cause rubbing

(#2) 20 Toyo Proxes T1-S $190
Where did they get that price? I get 235-45-17's for less then that.

But the Toyo's are great.

I had 2 sets of Dunlop SP 9000's on another car. They were good tires, but had no tread life. I toasted my first set in 16K miles. I will warn you though. The 9000's are VERY picky on rim width. I had under the min, & had alot of vibration, & balance issues. Once I stepped up to specs they road fine.

I think the rears are fine. The fronts need a lot more meat on them though. I would consider going 245 on the front.

fronts are same offset as stock, the rears are a couple of mm lower offset to allow a fat lip. Wheels in the rear look like they belong on a Hot rod vehicle

from the rear it looks extremely aggressive

see this pic I have all the stock amg wheels in the trunk and back seat. I even had my friend sit in the front seat and still didnt rub. All the tires weigh about 200 lbs.

the fenders on the clk430 are pre rolled

you can see the tires in the back

I just ordered a set of the goodyear eagle F1 gs-d3 235/45-17 for my wheels. Cant wait to try them out. I've only had all season tires, so this is my first summer set. They were 152 a piece.

I know but I hate the Pirellis P7000 supersport that came with the wheels

I ended up getting the Pirellis Pzero nero M+S in the front for now to match the P7000 in the rear. Now the front look meatier than the back and its driving me nuts.

O well it will have to do till Tirerack gets the Goodyears

Quick Reply: Whats a good summer tire thats reasonably priced
