Well, my father is looking to get a new car, and is really interested in the E320 4matic, i mean its a nice car, but seriously, its more than 50k, and im also not sure how the Merc AWD systems measures up to its other german competitors. I mean, for that amount of cash, why not wait a little while for the new A6's and A8's to come out.

The new W211 Eclass 4-Matic is not out yet, its coming as a 2004 model.....unless your father is looking at a leftover 02 W210.

For 2004, its been pretty much confirmed that the E320 will be called the E350 (more power).

The new A6 will be in line with it, but not the A8 (that's going to essentially be $70K and its a full size car).

An E500 4-Matic would be a different story though, that's cool.

 

HAHA FIGURE THIS ONE OUT, so im away at college, at Boston University, and he got the car, not a 4matic but an e320 nontheless. He didnt tell me how much he payed for it, but its a 2003, and he did ad a few options, so as i look at the website, i come to find out that with a few options, it ran him at LEAST 55k, and with all of the options my sister thinks he has.... i went to the website and it ran him damn near 60. Seriously, thats a lot for a E320 dont ya think??

I wish MB would come out with an E55 4matic, that would be legit.

 

The E500 is the better deal, you get the V8, Airmatic, Full Leather, all of which are standard (Airmatic and Full leather are optional on the E320). Airmatic is part of the very pricey Sport package. When you start adding all of this crap to an E320, you're right where an E500 comes in (which bases at around $54k).

Only extra expense on the E500 is the $1k gas guzzler tax.

Depending on how the cars were optioned out, there are guys on the MB forum who did a comparison between the two models before buying and have only been $2-$3k apart in some cases.

The E500 is truly the better buy, but some people still don't want it (price aside) because they don't want the V8....they think its overkill.

I see far more E320s on the road than E500s. It was the same situation with the last Eclass, many more E320s running around vs. E430s.

The V6 Eclass models have always outsold the V8s.

I am in love with the entire E series from Mercedes. Beautiful cars inside and out.

 

My father has a 2002 E320 4matic platinum edition with the sport 17-inch rims with p7000. It is a sweet car rides so smooth, and a lot of torq the only thing is that i wish he bought the navi.
Great value a lot of power. His is black with sport rims and light cream with gray trim. Sweet car he paied $60.000 out the door with taxes and all the special options a year and a half ago.
We live on the east cost where he needed the AWD if he lived in the WEST i would have told him to get the Kompressor.

 

the E's have awesome featurees...but i just cant get over how ugly they look to me, particularly from the rear...looking at a recent pic of the e55, I was real dissapointed...what a work of engineering magic, in a real ugly body. i know ppl will hate me for saying that...but to each his own right?

Agreed, I have basically heard zero negative comments on the car to date (styling wise).....some bitter W210 owners think the rear is a little Honda Accordish, whatever. The car is a gorgeous evolution over the previous E.

 

Yes The rear is a big improvement over the W210 by a mile, not to mention the better looking wheels. The W210 wheel looked like hub cabs, worst looking MB wheels by a long shot

I love the look of the new E, especially the e55. Hey if your mom and dad are happy with the E320 and have the money for it then all the power to them. As mentioned, some people don't care for the extra power from the additional two cyclinders. Another car that proves this is the GS300. For a relative few bucks more you can just get the GS4.

Personally I would have looked at an A6 2.7t/4.2, 540 or a GS430 for the dough your parents dropped. I would definitely gone the e500 route as well.

E320 is still a damn fine car...

i think the only point is, that for a few k more, and E500 is a bargain..BUT, like others are saying, it depends on what the driver is looking for.

 

I bought I Mercedes once. It was 1988 and the car was a 300E. It was the worse car I ever owned. It burned oil terribly. It also had the most spartan interior for a car of that time. I bought it for my wife to use in her real estate business. When you bring it into the dealership for service, they see you coming 5 miles away and rip you off royally. The car was a piece of shit and I would never buy another. But, that's my opinion.

Wow, that's interesting....my oldman had an 1988 300E, that was some hot car back then (one of the first cars with headlight wipers).

Mercedes has never been known for crazy Interiors, look at Rolls Royce...you can't get anymore spartan than that.

He took out a five year lease on the 300E (that's what they were pushing back then) and the car had no issues in the time he had it. The car was basically perfect, could not have asked for more.

MB really does make awesome cars, their merger with Chrysler set them back a bit in the quality department...but they are recovering quickly.

 

Lol, a 300e, I used to ahve one of those, it was weird, only 1 center windshield wiper...
But anyways, now im in talks for gettin a new car, i wonder what woud be a good buy. Im thinkin of gettin a project car, like gettin an old Datsun 240z, and swappin somthing else into it ya know... Any ideas?

My parents looked at one u no the 97-03 they hated the look never wanted one!!......as for benz's i love them i was think of gettin a c240 instead of a cl.....my parents think if ur gonna spend that much on a car dont get "the baby benz" the only benz they actually like is the s-class and m-class.....s-class is too much for them and we had an ML430 for about 3 months sold it cuz we didnt want it to be parked in Philly all day do too my dads job and just get something nice but cheap i.e. dodge durango.......well to get to the point we got a seville instead of the E

I totally agree with your styling opinion. The front end looks really good, but the rear quarter panel and rear end are uglier than the previous generation E-Class/CLK. Now if your talking about the new CLK55 AMG, that thing looks really nice. The body kit makes the car, its ugly without it. Maybe it will grow on me, but right now I like my mom's 99' E320 better.

 

That Benz cost too much for what you get, although it is a nice car.
