What will happen to the site for now...
Soopa is going to host the site from his house via cable or DSL. I am going to send him the server next week. The site wont be as reliable for obvious reasons. Right now the server is on a 100mb link in a controlled environment via the collocation space at my work. If anyone would happen to have a hookup for free collocation, let us know, otherwise its off to Soopa's next week.
How about a cheap co-location.. I know i would pay or give a donation of $22 a year or $2 a month for the site.. I bet we could get at least 50 members to give 22 bucks.. that would give us $100 a month.. I bet the would cover co-location costs.
Just an idea

I think this is a great temp solution.
One suggestion:
I know the post whores won’t like it, but I think we should just keep the CAR related sections open.
Mainly: Car Talk, Gen 1, Marketplace & Local Meets.
There are plenty of “Rambling” & “Off-Topic” type sites on the NET, I think we should focus on CL specific areas to make the best out of our limited bandwidth.

That is probably what we will end up doing. There will be no post whoring sections after the move if the line can't take the load.
Soopa should upgrade his DSL connection and at least around here, I could get 1.5 MB down and 768Kb up for about $100/month. I'm sure people could spot Soopa some money to cover the cost of an upgraded connection.

WebToker, email me at camaro@momentumbusiness.com
I can host your site on a T1 or redundant DS3's. There's also a 1.5 up and down DSL pipe available. We run only windows 2000 and every server in our company (about 145) are Dell Poweredge 2450s. I like this site, just registered and don't want to see it go down.

Soopa,
Who is your phone company? Are you sure that you can get a static IP on your DSL line? If you PM your phone number to me I can have my guys at Genuity run it through the telecordia list to see what speeds are available to you. If you are an old Bell Atlantic customer I am not confident that you can get a real static IP.

He doesn't need a static IP address, he could just use No-IP+ at http://www.no-ip.com..... Furthermore, why don't you guys just tack a small ad at the bottom, the postwaring would cause many hits on it and that would probably pay for the site... I'd rather see that because I know I won't pony up any money......

No-IP is gay. That is not something I would use for a web site with as many users as we get.

If Soopa has Bell Atlantic service he most likely doesn't have a static even if they say he does. I can check on that since my old job was very involved in BA DSL. If he is using a Data CLEC then I would be concerned cause that are all belly-up. Covad declared Chapt 11 this week. They were one of the last ones...

If Soopa is still stuck with a dynamic IP all he has to do is goto 'DYNDNS.ORG' and configure an account (it's free), that way he won't need a static IP. This of course is a temporary solution, but better than no solution if he needs it.

If you must run intel at least run linux...
No-IP has been stable for several months for the applications I've used. My friends run web-based email servers and quake servers using no-ip and have had no problems.

Not a big fan of windoze servers at all actually. We've had nothing but trouble with our Dell servers at my company. We've moved to a 100% Sun environment.

BTW, I'm not sure if Soopa is into changing providers, but I do know that Sprint's wireless is cheaper than DSL, and has a faster upstream and downstream when it's not stormy ourside. Also, he'd get a static IP for only 10 bucks (1 time fee), and 10 bucks for each additional that he needs. If he's gonna be shelling out for DSL, and is open to changes that's an option, but he'll be going wireless and some people don't care for that a lot.
Yeah we're in the works in figuring something out. We've never had a problem with Dell hardware, except when we tested Norton Corporate on a few test servers...It didn't like exchange, ISA, or SQL too much so we dumped it...we're now running that with a few patches and other upgrades that make it work flawless. As far as working with intel, why go linux with no support when you can have unix? 50% of my servers are quad xeons, the other 50% are dual 1ghz p3's. My network admin and I have no issues with 2000, and with the amount of data and traffic we pertain as 'mission critical', we're very secure and happy with windows.
Does no-ip have a client for linux? Don't forget that is the OS the server is running. As far as dynamic IPs... I have a dynamic through Cox/Roadrunner but they give 12 hour leases. So in the 4 months I've had the service I've never had an IP change. I don't think Verizon DSL gives DHCP leases that are this long so the chance of getting frequent IP changes is possible. I do think Verizon has a DSL solution for businesses that might have a Static IP option.
