What is so great about the type S?

So when I was shopping for a car, I definetly wanted something that will not need much upgrades, so I picked type s after reading that is has sport suspension, sport oriented tires, big engine and also a nice audio system, among other things. However, here is what I am hearing from all of you guys and please correct me if I am wrong:
The suspension sucks, the brakes suck, the Bose Blows and the engine looses too much power to the wheels because of the shitty auto-tranny. The 17 wheels need to be replaced and tires are not grippy enough. Yes these are very terminal statements, but I am trying to make a point.
So here is the question? Did Acura just not put enough sport emphasis into this car? Is this just an accord with a bigger engine and stiffer suspension and better interior? Is it because Acura did not expect this car to gain such popularity with a younger crowd which wants stiffer suspension, big tires, better brakes? Or is just simply to each his own and economies of scale, meaning Acura could not keep the price low enough and put the "good" stuff into it. And what is the wrong with the Blows system anyway. I think its very nice and crispy clear even at the max, only needs base.
I am just trying to decide whether this car really needs upgrades to suspension, tires, etc. or is it mostly car guys needing something to do to their cars to be diffirent while keeping busy.

My only real complaint would be the tires.
Otherwise I love this car.

Well, I would have to say that if you did more research before you bought the car you would probably not feel this way. I think you are forgetting that this is a luxury car with a 'sporty' kick to it. This is not an all out racer, never claimed to be, never will. I love this car as a daily driver and I don't agree with 90% of what you have said. If I wanted a racer I would have bought an ITR not even a 330xi or an IS300.

I love this car as a daily driver too. However, being limited in funds when I was buying this car, I thought this was by the far the best value under 30k. Bimmer was 40k, I did not want anything used, and I got swooned by this car on first test drive so there was not much else after that but I got everything I wanted in this car except 2 extra doors. I am just looking for an explanation of why we as a collective believe that certain upgrades need to be done. However, the S is the best car on the market for the money, bar none.

I think most of these people would mod any car they get. Hell, I know I would... found a swank bodykit for the modena. I don't care if it's a ferrari, I'd mod it.

You also have to consider the source. 9/10 of the people who frequent this board would be classified as ehthusiasts. By nature enthusiasts are never satisifed and desire to make the breed better. Overall the CL(S) exceeds most of its owners expectations, but the enthusiasts modify the car to elevate it to their expectations. So, when you read these posts just consider the source!

I agree that what you have at this group is a bunch of guys who would upgrade anything they bought. There's no way a company like Acura is going to produce a car that's as low & as stiff as *most* of the guys who contribute to this forum want it. They're making a car that has to appeal to as wide an audience as possible, so there obviously have to be some compromises for comfort, driveability, economy, reliability, etc.

The *only* thing I think Acura should have done is offer the car with a manual trans (6 speed ideally), apart from that I think the performance, handling, comfort, & luxury features are more than adequate for a car at it's price. If you want to sacrifice ride comfort by installing shorter, stiffer springs & lower profile tires that option's available to you, and that's great, but don't think that because a lot of the folks at this forum lean toward customization & performance that there's anything inherently wrong with the CL-S.

My 2 cents (CDN) worth,

SK

PS. I also agree that the Audio system sounds just fine :-).

There aren't many cars that are so well developed that can't be upgraded. This of course excludes some of the super exotics and such. I'm not sure how many on this board felt that the handling was so bad that they had to get the sways, springs, wheels and tires. And I'm sure that they didn't find their cars slow, that it required the intake/headers. It's sounds completely normal to want to make a nice car even better. This is probably the reason that people go with the upgrades. You have a stock CL so you should be able to determine if the different aspects of the car are satisfactory or not. It's possible that you find that these aspects (handling, acceleration) are lacking and require upgrades. And it's perfectly fine to be upset that if you think you didn't get your money's worth. But I doubt many people will say that didn't get a lot of bang for their buck with te CL-S

In a word, No. Not at least for a lot of people.

In a word, Yes. With more luxury features too.

No, they just didn't design this car for the younger crowd and I don't think this car has much popularity with the younger crowd. This forum is definitely not representative of most '01 CL buyers. Every time I see a CL, there is a baby-boomer driving it - right where the target market is!

<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">

Economies of scale has a lot to do with the price. Acura cheaped out in some ways, but the car is still very good and a very good value. No way in hell is a 330Ci worth $10K more similary equipped.

<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">
And what is the wrong with the Blows system anyway. I think its very nice and crispy clear even at the max, only needs base.

It's all in what you're used to. If you've ever heard a great car stereo, you'd think this one sucked too. The Blowz is okay for my tastes too, but I recognize that it could be MUCH higher quality.

It all depends upon the person. I chose to make my car a little more sporty than the way Acura designed it. I don't want a BMW or an IS300. The value is just not there for me. Plus I don't particularly care for the styling on either car. I have no problems with trying to make this car something it wasn't designed to be. I don't have to be an engineer to make my car suit my needs a little better.

Dont get me wrong, I am not upset, I am just looking for some feedback and trying to learn new things. I do agree with you that it's difficult to buy something that does not need or could not be upgraded. I also agree with people that say by definition that an enthusiast will upgrade because he is an enthusiast and wants to make something good even better.
However, when I bought this car, I was really under impression that nothing needs to be done to it, but of course I was an acura-cl.com virgin back then . I am extatic that this board opened my eyes to various possibilities. No pun intended.

reading this board(bored) daily makes me hyper. i am perfectly happy with my stock cl-s. but i feel slow and left out after reading all the mod crap all day. i fit the demographics perfectly of the "ACURA" buyer.
the people on this board are not what acura/honda expected. this car is by far the best one for the money. if you want more,go for it. if you are happy like me, read less of this and you will remain happy.
all im saying is that there is nothing wrong with modding your car, just dont do it because you read it here.
also, most cars you will encoumter on the street are stock and you will still kick the shit out of them if you desire.

When people see a 21 year old ( I LOOK 15)
driving a benze or bimmer, they say look at thet rich Fu^k with the silver spoon sticking outta his A$$. When they see tha ACURA they just think overpriced accord, and thats the way I like it. Dont want all the prestige and i dont wanna be summtin I aint if ya know what i mean. The car is quick enough and brakes good enough for me, wouldnt mind upgrading the suspention though!
