What happened to Honda oil filters?

I went to the acura dealership today to purchase an oil filter. been using honda oil filters for several years now with mobil 1....from my 91 crx si to the acura cl i own now. whenthe guy gaveme the filter.....damn..it was so small. it was almost half the size of the old filter that i had on the car now. is there any diff in performance if the filter is smaller? the guy told me all honda filters for the cl are that small now. i ended up going to the car shop next door and purchased a k&n. why the size diff?

Is there a larger filter application that will fit our cars? Is the Mobil 1 filter oversized for our cars or just a filter for another car? Would be nice to be able to just cross refrence another application. Tempted to try the filters for the wife's Jetta. They're twice as big as the filter on the CL and I bought a whole case of them cause they also fit my old car. If a filter screws on is it safe to use?

All the CL filters are that short. I speculate that there is some clearance issue with the suspension arm its near. I have been using a Pure 1 filter with is half again as long (not specified for the CL). Got to have lots more capacity. So far it fits fine and no problems. Dont remember the stock number but Nashua knows it.
