What does Type S really mean?

As time goes by, I keep finding myself asking the same question?

What does it really stand for?

I always assumed it was for "Sport" or "Sports package", but more and more I think this is a joke.

I mean, what do we really get that is sporty?

Yes, a bump in peak horsepower. Touche.

But, there are other cars (i.e. the Mazda 6 to name the latest) that completely out-sport us in stock form.

The 6 came out right away with a 5 speed.
The 6 has 7" wide rims.
The 6 has a decent weight.
The 6 has a body kit.
The 6 has a true sports tuned suspension with emphasis placed on handling.

What did we really get that was "sporty"?
Tires--definatley not.
Wide rims to mount tires on--absolutely not.
A sporty suspension-no way: SUV height, crappy shocks, massive body roll.
A body kit-no, but the 4 door does.
Decent weight--nope.
Emphasis on handling? Nope

Oh yeah, what about the RSX-S?
Good tires--no
Good suspension? SUV ride height
In all honesty, there is barely any difference between the Non-S and S RSX. They don't even put different wheels on it.
You can't even tell them apart!

All I can say is that next time around I will not be buying a car that requires me to do so much work in order to make it into what I want. I really didn't think this would be the case when leaving the lot, but I guess I was fooled.

Typical Buyer's remorse. Sell it and buy the aforementioned lesser vehicles if you must. CL-S still a great car and a great value.

I hope you enjoy your next car. As for me, I'm enjoying this car..
I still get a smile on my face when I look at it and think "That's my car!"..

just what he said. I still get a kick out of it when people come up to me and say what a good looking car it is and how so shiney Hey atleast you enjoyed it for a while. You have to take in consideration that the cls was one of the first to raise the bar so high. Any manufacturer with any common sense would look to atleast raise the bar on the competition in some way.

Typical responses.

I never said word one about not enjoying my car. In fact, I enjoy it every time I drive it and have no remorse.

I was just commenting on the fact that there are a multitude of other cars that come in stock, non-sports package form that are far sportier than our "Type S" model.

That's all. I'm just wondering if Type S has become a disappointment or a joke in the sports car community.

The 2001's have 7" wide rims don't they? I guess we can take one back on the Mazda 6 :P

My brother asked me the other day if I still liked my car and it took me all of about half a second to say "I still love it" I can honestly say that right now there is no other car I would rather have...within my price range that is. I plan on keeping it for a few more years or unless there is somthing out there that I will like better. If you feel like you were fooled when buying the car then maybe you didn't test drive it enough. My salesman told me to do whatever I wanted to test it. So that's what I did and I was convinced that I wanted the car. 2 years later and I have no regrets.

I think what Acura gives you value for the money in the Type "S" and is a good deal in comparison to most other cars in it's class. In my opinion, I don't see a problem in the way it corners either, but I don't take corners at 60 MPH either. The power was good without the mods I put on. But, human nature is that everyone wants better than what you have. If you don't like what you have currently, then invest in some mods. If you don't want to do that then sell the car and get one you will be happy with instead of being miserable.

The seats alone in my Type S have gotten a lot of compliments. People really like the side supports. I paid extra for the Type S just because of the 35 more horsepower. Everything else that came with the Type S package was just a bonus.

Don't be fooled by rims and shit that's what Mazda did with the Protege not to long ago. Remember one thing that Mazda6 will never ever be compared to a BMW 330 not look wise. performance wise, definetly not price or status wise. You are lucky to even consider the Mazda6 in the Accord V6 territory. I do understand what your saying but any more fine tuning would almost always come with a higher price tag. Remember the CL-S has only 15 less HP to the NSX but a couple of pounds of more TQ.

One more thing the Mazda6 has all the goodies well how does it perform compared to the CL-S it wouldn't surprise me if the CL-S would beat the Mazda6 with the 5sp. What's the point of making the Mazda6 sporty if the numbers don't back em.

Just my .02

I agree with everything ya just posted, but the NSX has 290 hp to the CL-S 260.

Just because the Type S specs don't meet YOUR own personal needs/criteria doesn't mean that Acura didn't make them different. I suggest you read Acura's website to get an idea of the difference in specs. The springs are stiffer, the roll bar is (slightly) larger, the wheels are larger, the engine is more 'tuned' with higher HP/torque and redline, the cockpit is a little more sportier... The list goes on.

Remember, the target audience of this car is not the 18 year old that wants a ricer-mobile or a blown muscle car. It's (probably) for the mid-30's to 50ish year olds who want a daily driver luxury sport coupe hybrid. This car is a hybrid. Remember that too. It's not designed to be ultimate sports car for the occasional weekend track circuit or a true luxury car that'll put a Bently to shame. I think Acura did a good job -- that's why I bought it.

Obviously if you want a stiffer lowered car with a louder exhaust/intake note and tuner wheels with rubber band tires you can do it. Most of the people that post of these forums have. It's not that hard to modify this car to your own needs. That's a nice feature too. For under $5K you can easily change the Type S to the Type JZ.

Here are the correct answers:

S is for "Save your money... it is a good deal"
S is for "Spiced up... you get all the works, loaded baby "
S is for "Spoiled... ... I am lost, I need my NAV"
S is for "Speedy me... I am quicker than a CL-P! "
S is for "Seats... are the best out there "
S is for "Smart... I got all the above "
S is for "Screamer... Yeah ...Get the CAI and Headers first"

For others:
S is for "SUV... ... Is it an SUV...it has the 4x4 look "
S is for "Squeaky... ... Those tires are PIGS "
S is for "Snake... ... It rattles like a ratlle snake "
S is for "Shoe Polish Paint... ... Please let the rocks fly away... Acura should have designed a field energy Shield"
S is for "Slow... ... I should have bought a SVT Cobra"
S is for "Stupid me... ... I should have bought a BMW"

No. I like my car. (and I'll also probably mod the suspension sometime in the next year or so -- it's not a big priority right now)

JZ,

It is a typical response for people to defend their cars and you may not have been knocking the CLS but you sure weren't saying anything good about it. Hey, if your not happy with it then there are definitely other options...thats the great thing about the automotive industry!

I really do love my car--in fact, I hand washed her yesterday in 40 degree weather and she looks great today. I'm just trying to understand what "Type S" means now and will mean in the future. I guess currently it just means "mildly tuned toward Sporty, but not really a Sports Package".

Do you guys think the upcoming Type S cars will have more sport to them or just the same mild makeover? I just can't think of a sports package that doesn't at least offer performance tires.

JZ first how many of those cars were around in march of 2000?
we do have 7 inch wide wheels ive had 245/45 tires on my stocks with no adverse affects (i recomend 235/45) our car wasnt meant to be a light weight handler ,you need weight to be a luxo tourer....this car started something big and we will all benefit...the rattles can only be heard because the car is so quiet...i dont think most of us are the type of people that would be satisfied with any car the way it comes....modding is more than making a car sporty..its making it more than what it was...more than the next guys...

Well of course certain things could be improved upon, but nothing's perfect. I mean the Type S could have come with better tires, Comptech suspension parts, etc., but most of us knew what we were getting with the Type S and unfortunately Acura doesn't offer a Type R CL/TL.
