what car to get for $5k?

i am asking for my friend.. since he crashed his teg gs-r he has to buy another car, but his limit is $5k. right now he's considering a 2.2 cl with unknown miles or a '96 maxima se with 120k miles. i told him that with the transmission problems on the cl it probably wouldn't be a wise choice to get that. what car do you guys think he should get?

He can take mine if someone can get it totaled...
j/k

I didn't think there were transmission problems before the 2nd gen's, but I could be wrong.

I think the latest consumer reports goes back to 96 for reliability ratings, goto B&N and check it out for the Max.

not sure if the 1st gen had transmission problems either but i guess it's better to be safe than sorry. besides, i don't think he knew if he was talking about the 2.2 or 3.0.

just to let you guys know, the selection is not just limited to those two cars. please give suggestions as to what cars you think would be a good buy for that price. he is looking for something a little performance oriented.
