Weird ticking noise from my beloved 6sp...any ideas?

"tick" is the best I can do on explaining the noise-id say ping but I know Id just get a shitload of piston/tranny/heads related answers.

anyway, it only happens(so far as I can tell) in gears 1-4. it occurs right after I shift and release the clutch...but not always. sometimes it wont happen at that moment and instead it will happen after I let off the gas for the first time after shifting. the clutch is grabbing as good as they do and my acceleration and overall power don't seem to be affected.

If anyone knows anything on this matter, pass it on. If a better description is needed please let me know. thanks

not sure if its the solenoid

I looked into the purge threads and I wish I had when I had my TL; (thanks Dru, you might be right)I remember THAT noise but I don't think its the same as what I'm currently hating. The noise I hear is NOT the continuous tick that the solenoid problem is famous for. This noise, while similar in sound, only happens right after releasing the clutch or when I first start to decelerate. In either situation, it only ticks once until either situation is recreated. SO I ask again, specifically to the 6speeders, what the hells going on with my damn car?????

I had the exact same problem w/my 6-spd... It took the dealer 3 visits to find the problem, and at first they couldn't duplicate the sound (idiots)... Anyway, turned out it was my left front wheel bearing... They also had to re-torque all the drive axles/control arms/sub frames. It could have been any of those things. Should still be covered under warranty if you have one.

You can buy remanufactured ones from any auto parts store. They will charge you a core charge until you bring the old ones back (maybe 50-100 bucks which you will get back.) Besides the core, the axles for our CL are unfortunately probably pretty expensive. I'm thinking 200 a piece. They might be cheaper depending on where you go, but in my experiences working at Napa it's an Acura so they won't be too cheap.

If you hear the clicking noise when your going around turns then it's def the CV axles, but I'd think w/only 75k miles that they wouldn't fail that quickly... It's almost certainly some component w/your drivetrain/front suspension. Like I said in my last post it took Acura 3 times to find the problem and even then they just fixed/checked several diff things at once so I never really new exactly where the noise came from.

Personally, I'm tired of my ENGINE TICK!!!!! tic tick tick tic tic tic tick tic tick tick is getting so annoying.... well guess it's time for the valves clearance to be checked.

Good luck man, hope it fixes easy, 6 spds kick ass

You may want to check your cat heat shield. May be loose & hitting something slightly. Could be that simple.

I'm with fuzzy, I have almost the same problem but only at low rpm when i'm accelerating I here it sort of tick and it sounds like it's coming from that area, but I also know I need new motor mounts : between mods and maintenance it's never ending.

Bad motor mounts could also be a cause.

well, Im taking the beast in to Acura on Sat so we'll see. I read some of the motor mount saga and while I didn't read all of it I heard no mention of this problem. Have I just not read up that point or is not associated with that discussion? ... yeah, laziness on my part I know.

I recreated the noise for the dealership's service manager who had never encountered it before. She recreated it for their lead mechanic. They ended up tracing it back to the brakes...saying the after market rotors and pads created a gap of some sort (rotors are in good shape and pads still have over 50%). Originally it was supposed to cost 60 but they ended up not charging me for it. I was told the problem could probably be fixed with some sort of shim for 120. apparently they would have to take off the pads and rotors to do it. has anyone ever heard of this happening with with am brakes?????

I'm not buying that since I've had the same noise with my stock rotors and pads....

Baer pads not sure on the rotors they were installed prior to me buying the car. It does sound a bit fishy, and yeah dealership/stealership but I have had great experiences with this dealership in the past. the noise doesnt appear to be connected with the brakes. I mean it never actually makes the noise durring or directly after break useage.

There are supposed to be shims between the pads and caliper piston. If they're not there, the brakes make noise. To put them in the rotors don't need to come off but the pads do.

you are correct about the shims. I'm not following where the shims would go that the dealer is referring too though. it's as if they are talking about the hub or spindle or something.

I have a funny feeling it may actually be the differential making this noise especially since it seems to be apparent only when applying torque to the front wheels... its a clicking that seems most noticable as the next gear is engaging and the tires are applying grip. it only lasts a split second.

A bad wheel bearing could be the cause. That comes from the hub area & could be taken for a brake related noise.

Love the car, hate the noises!

Seems like a few others are experiencing similar problems. Just wanted to try and get this thread moving again. I really don't think its the brakes but I would like to know if anyone else has installed AM rotors and pads without the "shims" and what their experiences have been.

I'm with you, Jay. It's during low RPM acceleration that I hear it. The more I throttle and the lower the RPM, the louder it gets. But as soon as I back off and just cruise, I don't hear it. Anybody else have this similar problem and solved it yet?

here's a link to another thread discussing a similar problem.https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=196729

I may try the "white lithium grease" today and see if it helps. If anyone else has made any headway with this oh-so annoying problem PLEASE POST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
