VSA is excellent in snow!

I was surprised how well it works! amazing stability doing corners on snowed in roads. I just couldn't loose control no matter how hard I tried (within reasonable limits).

I completely agree. Me and my bro both took our cars out, and they did well, his has the AWD, so that was amazing in his Lex. But I must say the CL handled well!

I'm still trying to get used to driving on snow/ice with snow tires on my CL. I don't have VSA though, so it is even more fun.

Naturally, it's subjective on the tire grip. I had a pair of worn stockers and got caught it a light snow. I lost it going 10 mph around an off ramp that I travel every day and completely lost control, resulting in $6000 damage and a bent frame.

I once got into a very minor accident with my previous car on black ice and never drove without winter tires ever since. I have a set of Hankook w400 on the CL now and it's not bad at all. And I was using Toyo G02 Plus previously and they were amazing. While everyone was going 20-30km/h I could easily pass them all at 60-70km/h without worrying about loosing control. and it was fwd Audi with ABS only, no traction or stability controls of any kind.

Mine works great in the snow too. I really try not to get caught in the snow or shitty weather in the CL though. That's where "Rusty" comes into play...

VSA, pfft .. FWD DRiFT, y0 !!

.. But seriously, this car's great during the winter, I even have enough confidence to blast by everyone at 50/60MPH and be in complete control. Although there was one incident where the tires gave out and I almost slammed into another vehicle. Normal turning speed too, like 10mph.

never driven in snow (well once in a 4cl camry with family), but i wouldnt mess around if i were some of you guys. just as cruz said, 6k damage at that low of a speed. vsa wont help if the front wheels lose complete traction. once traction on the front end is completely gone, your done.
and icey roads have almost no resistance, so when it lets go, it wont catch on easily. with awd or rwd and understeer, you can get out of trouble. fwd just wont do it, no way to kick the tail out once the front is lost!

4wd > VSA

91 explorer = $1100
Ability to go pretty much anywhere you want and not worrying if you wreck = PRICELESS

Although different, yet still related, what should we do when we hit a patch of black ice and need to get the car back under control?

LSD + skinny winter tires > Electronic Nanny

My cheapie steelie/winterforce combo from Tirerack has worked great so far. I can only lose traction in the snow if I floor it more than 75% or REALLY try to get it sideways.

Yep, no complaints. Tires a little noisier than when the stockers were brand new (to be expected of snow/ice tires), but their added grip in slush/snow is DEF worth it. Oh yeah, and last week I got tire spin powershifting 4th. Yeah I know, low grip tires + 10* pavement, but still getting a tiny bit of spin at 90mph is kina cool.

dont know about the cls, but my tl has a foot ebrake, so it would be harder to do this. you only need the ebrake for a sec. and a foot brake would be very hard to modulate and release.
do cls auto's have a hand brake? I thought it was only the 6 speed?

Yes only us 6 speeders have the hand ebrake. When I test drove an auto it had the foot brake

I hate the foot brake too, but for some reason the car knows when I want to kick the tail because it doesn't lock up when I mash it. Only locks up when I'm not moving. Purrrty nifty.

driving back from mammoth a few years ago, a cl-s lost control changing lanes in thin ice, right in front of me. it ended up hitting about a 4 ft. tall wall of snow. I, of course was in my landcruiser, which eats up snow for breakfast. me and my friends stop to help, which was like 13 little asian people (we had a 3 car caravan) running out to save an older white couple. When the cops came, it was OBVIOUS they thought it was one of us was being stupid, and the look on his face when the older white gentleman said it was his car was priceless. i never got to see the damage, as we didn't stick around for the tow truck.

thinking back on it, i wonder if that guy is on the forums, it was a black CL-S w/ shaved ACURA emblems. i think this happened back in the winter of 2002.

just thought i'd share my one snow related story, as i don't get to have that many living down in so.cal.
