I have been using the same filter that came with my icebox for over 6 years now. Do you realy need to replace or just clean and reoil? Would a k&n filter be better than the one that was supplied with my icebox?

just get the k&n kit to clean and re-oil. If the filter is dark red or brown its time to clean.

IMO it's really all the same as far as filter media. It's really not going to gain any huge #'s so just go with you think is good.

damn, so thats what a CAI sounds like under WOT. I like it, but its pretty pricey and im quite content with me drop in/resonator removal.

yea, 6 years is a bit long. its time for a cleaning

my winter filter is a dry AEM dry flow and summer one is basically a super fine wire mesh in the shape of a filter haha, and really other than protection if going from filter to filter made anything more than half a horse I would be surprised, they are all very similar

Its not even a cold air its just the blox velocity stack and filter. I used the stock piping and just threw a clamp on it.

lol well i decided to wait it out and get the filter in the spring or summer.

i gave a quick peek and in almost 11months and 31000kms later the intake is still fairly clean...clean enough that I'm not wasting 80$ on a new one.

And I don't plan on washing it... I may, but I'm just not a firm believer in cleaning a filter...

it's a filter it starts off clean and it gets grimey, cleaning it although is beneficial I dunno if that suits my likings

^ a velocity stack is nothing more than rounded edges/corners inside the filter so the air that gets sucked into the straight piped intake can cruise over a nice curved edge versus a 90 degree cut which makes the movement of airflow more free-flowing

A little FYI:
after 40-50K the flow rating on a filter goes down by approximately 45% !!!!!! which would mean mine right now is at about 75% optimum flow.

after reading this info on the side of a K&N filter box, I opted to buy a new one.

so I gave in and bought the injen after looking at k&n and and AEM.

AEM also has the built in velocity stack. I think most K&N filters do as well.

However I'm a brand loyal customer so I bought the Injen.

67$ with tax.... thought it'd be 80 actually... not baddd all things considered.

I'm gonna hold out for a little before tossing it on... I got some long drives to do in the next few days so I'm gonna wait till after all that to change the filter :-)

The Icebox filter can be cleaned. Ive cleaned mine using the Uni (brand) filter cleaner that I use for my motorcycle.

Dont forget to squeeze out the extra oil when you clean it.

And to go along with that I will include my highly detailed CAD schematics to help visualize how the velocity stack works.

No velocity stack

Velocity stack

i understand how it works i just wanna see it on their CL/TL

i dont think i'll be able to fit one since what im getting from you guys is that it starts out big then shrinks down to your inlet size (mine being 4 inches, p2r intake) so i'd have to have maybe a 6" velocity stack with a 6" inlet intake filter to go over it??

ORDER a 4 inch filter and it comes with the velocity stack inside it.

looks like a normal filter, put it on like a normal filter BUT it's got the velocity stack/curved edges inside.

nothing to worry about

I didn't say i dont clean it, i just dont replace it. i clean and reoil it every 15k miles. I was asking if you really need to replace it. The one that came with my icebox is a foam filter and it looks brand new after every cleaning so i dont see why ppl replace so often.

Theres no need to replace a cleanable filter unless its disintegrating or its so dirty cleaning it no longer has any effect on it.

well k&n said after 40-50K ur filter will only have 55-60% of the flow capacity.. so that's grounds for me to change it out at LEAST every 40K imho

Why did you go short ram??? CAI is the way to go

lol just cause it screams/is loud don't mean it pulls the hardest.

But I would think it's the most effective.

It just looks a lil retarded installed... looking at the filter it's like WOW, she's a biggie.

different strokes for different folks, as they say.

I'm sticking with what I got since it's done just fine so far.

basically i rigged this up this is not permanent im going to buy a short ram pipe and run the filter on it. My fender liner is not on anymore so i have a huge hole it gets enough air. but you feel the difference and thats for sure.

oh okay, so there are filters that have them built in and ones with the stack that you can put a filter over, thats what was confusing me

There is nothing wrong with a short ram intake, it gives better response at the cost of like 1 or 2 horsepower, cold air intakes usually give more mid range power at the cost of high rpm hp gains due to having restriction of air flow, short ram = good for high rpm, cold air = good for street cars.

I honestly prefer short ram myself because they give better throttle response and sound better, 1 or 2 hp is negligible.

Besides once you are moving there is plenty of cool air flowing into the engine bay. you cant really dyno them both I think honestly just because a dyno favors a cold air intake.

I know when i was stationed in japan the guys running NA motors favored the short ram for response and told me cold air is better for the street and that was a tuner at a reputable honda tuning shop.

IMO Response > 1-2 HP

And it is easier/cheaper to make/get a short ram intake.

sorry but short ram isn't the way to imho

i've seen people actually LOSE .1 on a 1/4 mile due to the fact the air isn't as dense/cold going into the motor, with a SRI. SO i cannot see the point.

I had both SRI and CAI on my previous car and sri sucked, it was slower no question

Theres too many variables to say they ran slower in the 1/4 because of the SRI.

They could have launched differently, they could have shifted differently, they couldnt been in a different lane, and most importantly, the weather was most likely different since Im sure they didnt do back to back runs to compare (but even that brings us back to the first three variables).

One tenth of a second is a bad shift. You cant blame the SRI on that.

lol either way my preference is CAI... looks better, colder air, and get u more power.

throttle response is irrelevant for my type of driving

lol that bad winter tire? it took a dump on me. Leaks air slowly.

I got summers tho so it's all good. But I did just drive to sudbury 4-5hr drive. and I had a full car and I got 225/50/r17 on my car with 33 offeset so the back rubs.. I got the rear fenders rolled but even still I needed more clearance due to the extra 1000 POUNDS in my car. so I used 2 of the winter tires which are 225/45/r17 and it made it up here only rubbing 2 times ever so slightly. lol

so now i my steering wheel i off a little cause of the different tires/wear combo on the front vs back. so the drive is annoying in my mind.

I hate not having a straight steering wheel. it's worse than a bad rattle for me.

Thats because you dont race, you are like every other ricer out there except you are in canada, you complain about brakes you bought that you didn't break in right, then you claim you want to make your car better with stuff that even a ricer would be scared to buy.

No offense but any information you post, makes the rest of this community look stupid.

Darkie you are a fool. All I did was race. I went through 2 motors cause of how hmuch I raced. I use to take my boy's M3 out and find people to race for $ in the 6 speed. Drove stick my whole life till i got my CL, and I always had a modded car. OH... I also crashed a porsche at 220Km/H at noon on the highway 11months ago. After that I sold my standard car which I ripped everywhere against anyone. I got my CL then in auto so I wouldn't be inclined to race.

lol u don't even know the definition of a ricer. If you did you'd know I am not even close.

I do all my own work on my car. I don't think it's the fastest thing out there by any means, I'm just making the car nicer. Not trying to prove anything.

And I bet I know plenty more than you.

Simply because I bought rotors on ebay and they were fucked, makes me incompetent...and u claim I didn't brek them in correctly when I did the same thing for my current brakes and they are fine. ?

you're just a hater

and what do I want to put on my car that not even a ricer would attempt?

If I was a hater I would be bashing you on every single post you made, not just the ones that make you look stupid. And yes buying ebay rotors does make you look incompetent, because you went through 3 sets and were still trying to justify that they were good, thats like a retard getting a scooby doo lunch box and thinks its the shit till he finds out there is no lunch in it, or a thermos with no chocolate in it.

Anyway it goes if you have to brag about what you did in the past its a facade, you got an auto because you thought it would stop you from racing yet everything you do to your car is to try and make it go faster....yeah im sure you tried to stop being a ricer.

so that would mean i WAS a ricer... no AM a ricer..

I don't like trying to justify/defend myself. Darkie will just say it's bragging, when really I'm just explaining how far along I have come.

If any one of you knew me you'd know how many miles I am from where I was.

Also to judge me because of rotors I bought off ebay. I was trying to save money, learnt the hard way.. I'm sure we all have done the same. The difference is you like holding it over my head and will never change ur bias opinion on me because of it.

arguing just isn't worth moving my fingers over it. especially for someone i don't kno nor will ever meet.
