v1 Suction Cups
v1 Suction Cups
Got my v1 last weekend. I plan to hardwire it in after I'm sure where I want to mount it. I've got it up just to the left of the mirror, using the suction cups, but it keeps falling off, or, if only one suction cup lets go, rotating around the one that remains.
So, is there a secret to using those thingers so that they hold dependably? They seem in good condition and they're clean.
If I dampen them before mounting, they hold a little better, but only a little.
So, wadda ya think?

Mine holds fine most of the time. The only time I've had problems is when I've parked facing the sun for long periods of time. Even then, it usually only lets go with one cup. Since it's hardwired, though, if the cups come off, it doesn't fall very far.
As long as you keep them off of the dots near the mirror, you should be fine. And make sure the cups are clean... no visible dirt or sand or anything in there.
Mine is up on the right of the mirror with the remote stuck on the never-used pullout paper-holder (or whatever it is). I like it on the passenger side except when my fiance jams her sunshield down into it. :swear2: I might move it to the driver's side just because of that.

- keep them off the dots on the windshield
- make sure you clean the area, no dust particles or dirt to break the suction
- Spit into the suction cup (or a drop of water, if have loftier sensibilities), right before you press it on, that will help insure a good seal.
I have no problems with mine, it sits there like a rock.

This is the only bad thing about the V1. I take mine in and out and sometimes it's a real pain, particularly in the colder weather. The unit is just a little too heavy.
Mine worked fine for 2 1/2 years on two different cars and then this past winter the suction cups let go and the unit came crashing down when I was parked.
This was when we had a stretch of ZERO DEGREE days this past winter.
I still have the unit hard-wired, but I use the visor clip right now until I find a better way to attach it to the glass.

Thanks for the tips, folks. 'Preciate it.
I think that I will spring for the remote, after all. I'd like to put the v1 on the passenger side of the mirror, but if I do, I won't be able to see the display well enough.
So, I guess I'll dig just a little deeper and get the remote.
Thanks, again.

I have mine over the dots without any problems at all.
If the cups don't stick, soak them in some very hot water for 5-10 minutes then let them cool, they will re-shape themselves.
Also clean the inside of the windshield, but use newspaper to wipe the windex off.
I have mine on the passenger side just fine, doesn't block my sun shade and the passenger side can go down about 80%.
Its on the edge of the top/shaded part of the windshield, no performance issues, and you can't tell its there from outside of the car.

They can go bad or you can get crummy ones
1. Outgassing will prevent them from sticking. As mentioned, clean the inside of the windshield very, very well.
2. They can and do go bad -- I know first hand. V1 can send a replacement set out for little – or no – money (depends on various factors).
Mine came loose on a hot day and would stick for weeks at a time and then just "drop." Cleaning didn't fix the problem. New suction cups from Valentine did.
YMMV
