V1 readout in rearview

I was just reading my newest Mobile Entertainment mag and saw an IS300 with their V1 read out in their rearview mirror, I though that was pretty sweet. But can he turn it off when he get's into Virginia? or what?

Im sure he can turn it off whenever he likes. Its just the display in the mirror. I doubt he needs to turn it off though with that stealth setup.

I explored that over a year ago. Don't know where I saw it (BMW forum?) but this guy was offering to do it if you send him your mirror and about $500.

I checked and I don't have the old email. I remember the guy was in the state of PA but I was "thinking" of driving thru there on the way to the 2001 PAA meet and letting him have at my mirror. If I find something, I'll let you know.

Yep, that's pretty cool. So where would you move the V1 main unit to, in order to make full use of stealth mode?

Exactly, you still have that bulky unit mounted somewhere on the windshield.

DO NOT DO IT.

how many times do we have to discuss this...

one of the things that makes the V1 so good is its magnesium casing...

the guy that did that is a member on IS300.net he had a whole write up about his car, its a pretty freakin sweet ride. everywhere you look there are TV's even in the rearview mirror on the left side. i dont remember about what he had under the hood, i think maybe a turbo was involved, but yeah that ride has to be one of the better IS's ive seen.

I think this whole thread has to do with the remote display, and not the main unit, so the magnesium case issue is not even relavent...

However, as other people have said, you can put the remote display wherever you'd like, but you still need to find a place for the main unit...

Good luck...

Yeah, there's not many places to hide the main unit. I just love what the 540 owner did with his... Although I doubt the detection works as well...

I'm just curious but isn't the rearview mirror one of the EASIEST things to see from behind the car and thus not exactly a stealthy place to put a display of any kind?

The BMW idea is great but that placement has really got to decrease performance. It's not even close to being level with the road which is rule #1 with detectors; straight & level.

jrock, the display is hidden BEHIND the mirror film on the rearview... its only visible when the light is on.

so if you turn the v1 off... it would be invisible.

From the Magazine Article:

"The rest of the detector sits slightly aft of the mirror in an enclosure formed from more ABS plastic and wrapped in tan suede to match the Lexus' interior."

The detector looks like it's some how attached to the headliner, centrally, right behind the rear view mirror. It's then covered to look like the rest of the headliner. It looks like a square domelight. Then I guess the front side of the detector that faces the road has no material covering it.

I actually went to check this out over the weekend. The place that did it in the IS300 is Mobile Innovations on route 46 in jersey. I spoke to one of the guys there, they put the display in your mirror, take the detector itself and house it in the same material as the roof with just the front and rear parts visible and then blend it in with the roof making it look seemless, they also give you a remote so that you can adjust the volume and turn it on and off. They want $1,100 for this PLUS the V1.

It won't matter how stealth the install is once the VA police's radar detector detector picks up the oscillator in the V1. They will pull you over, especially the state troopers around there. The only way around them is to have one of the units that shuts of the oscillator when it senses the detector detector. But then you likely have a much inferior unit to the V1! My preference when driving in VA is to trail a few cars that are high rollin so they get picked up first.

with the v1 in the magnesium, the oscillator is shielded.

Learn something new every day I guess. Was this factory shielding from Valentine or something done during the install? Nothing I've read stated that the V1 came shielded from Valentine.

Sorry to burst everyone's bubble on the V1 being stealth but there's a new radar detector detector that picks up all of them. I'm sure Mike V. will take care of this in the next upgrade, which brings me to my next point. Having it mounted up there would make removal somewhat difficult for upgrading unless they thought of that and tailored the install around it.

Easy solution...........i keep an extra POS detector in my car while in VA......IF i get pulled over, i hand over the crap detector and keep my v1

That’s what I did when I drove down to Florida last year.
I found an old UNIDEN in the basement and kept it in the glove box for the trip “just in case”.
I clipped it on the visor when driving through Virginia.

Luckily I never had to do the “switch” the entire trip.

Just to let everyone know... I was talking to the guy at http://www.apexcone.com/Radar/RadarLove.html, and he mounted the main unit of the V1 in his third brake light...and then he put his remote display in the rearview mirror...

I have no idea how he did it, that is just what he told me. I ordered my V1 on friday, and it is coming in the mail today!!

I'll be home tonight attempting a hardwire install!
