V1 installed

Just got a brand new V1 today, already installed it per Shawn's instructions. Only difference is I put remote in bottom tray (between seat heaters) instead of on top of steering column.

Takes a little getting use to the sound and the visual being in two difference places (most of the time I'm not using the remote though).

Already been on several test runs and there are two major noticable differences (between old and new V1): less false alarms and much longer Ka range, unless that rear arrow is lying.

Ken,

The other thing which I did diffferent than Shawn is to locate the detector on the passenger side of the mirror - I almost can't see it from the driver seat - which is no small task based on the size of the thing - but then not at surprising based on the size of our R/V mirror!

I have been happy with the remote in the tray below - its been there about a month.

Pretty soon, you'll be a V1 bigot too.

Hey Ken,

You know all that great stuff I have been saying about the V1?
It’s all a bunch of LIES.

My uncle is Mike Valentine and I was sent here to recruit all you guys into spending 400 BUCKS.

Just kidding................Enjoy your new toy.

I'm curious to know how much better the V1 works versus the Passport 8500.. "Shawn S" gave some good tips on placement and all, but as far as passport 8500 performance, I have not seen any mistakes. The false alarms I get are probably similar to any other detector.. The Automute feature works great.. After driving the same roads consecutively for the past 2 weeks I have found the spots that the alarm sounds (i.e. banks, opening automatic doors) another person might percieve as a false alarm. So make sure you monitor wether you can reproduce the alarm at the same location if you have a chance... Any X and K bands most definately fall into the above items causing it to go off.. The Ka band is the only concern. What I'd like to find out is how much faster the V1 takes to get the Ka indicator bar to go from low alert to full alert. I've estimated anywhere from 5-25 secs with the Passport 8500.. We all definately want a range that allows us to slow down on time by at least 20mph without causing the tires to screetch ofcourse. The Passport I might add has a remote on the power cord itself with a mute and alert indicator light.. This comes standard witht he unit. Unless the Valentine comes up with a smaller unit I don't think it's worth the hassle of dealing with bad esthetics design.
+++++++++++++++
For those of you thinking of buying one make sure you ask these questions to reviewers.. When they pass by a police and the alarm doesn't go off are they stopped? Reason for that is that people assume that a radar detector means a "police car" detector which fundamentally is false.. The units detect radar beams. If no infrared light is shot from the police car while you pass by the chances are there is no scan being performed therefore your detector will have NOTHING to detect.. Logical, but somehow widely misunderstood.. In cases like this if it doesn't go off and the cop stops you Demand to see the radar gun if he sais you were going too fast.. The gun is the only solid proof he/she has.. Everything else is heresay and can be contested in a court of law.
So next time you see a cop don't expect the detector to start yappin' unless they want to catch you. There units are powered and triggered so it's doesn't automatically turn on when they start their engines. That have to willfully command the gun to scan estimated speed. If you want top of the line detectors I think anything about $200USD will do well.. The V1 is not a good investment for the time being in my opinion.. Let them redesign the housing then maybe you can spend that extra cash burning in your pocket.

I can only comment on the 8500 on my experience with one as a former owner:

As far as your last paragraph: a lot of mistakes (almost a dozen); too many for me to get into (since this is not a radar detector forum).

Ken..........you should enjoy your new toy, the remote is very cool. I did the same install as per Shawn's instructions and I find it convenient. The nicest thing about the V-1 is what it doesn't do--false all the time. When it speaks, I listen, and of course look for the arrows!

joey...

We have all been-there-and-covered-that...

Search some of our past threads here and at acura-tl.com, h-a.net, adnausem

kensteele...congrats.

regarding the Ka band...perhaps you already discovered it but, according to some pages on the V1 webb site, the latest flavor of the V1 will allow you to REPROGRAM a number of features...the MOST attractive one to me is being able to boost the Ka sensitivity.

Bumping this up (I don't think its possible in any of the Passports, at least not my 7500) combined with the directional arrows gives us more help against the cursed low-power instant-on Ka-toting bears.

I'm seeing a lot more in the way of Ka signals this year. Few, if any of the signals even show as half-strength on my 7500.

However, 'Train nearby' comes over at full strengh...what a feature. I'm still waiting for the train to show up on the expressway...talk about sensitivity!!

My mad money for 'my' V1 got eaten by my well pump...sigh...and the better-half has threatened to sic the dogs on the next parcel delivery guy who shows up at my door.

As an interim solution, I've been able to find a number of 'front doors' on my usual loop to/from work who have been most accommodating...not to mention demonstrating why they qualified to purchase their current ride and NOT have ANY kind of radar detector at all.

I too just bought a newer V1 unit before my trip back to SD along with an M-10 Blinder Twin. My older V1 unit was starting to bug with the cig lighter mounted remote display. So now my remote display is by my left knee. Just below the display dimmer. I also mounted the switch for the M-10 in the blank button next to the dimmer switch. Later down the road when my head unit's come in I will flush mount the remote unit just above the head unit's where the bill fold tray is.
I also put my V1 on the passenger side of the rear view mirror.

Can you still see the V1 while mounted on the passenger's side? Even though I have a remote, I tend to use the regular display on the V1 unit most of the time. I would think that the passenger's visor (when in use) would block the V1, no?

Ken,

I have the unit mounted on the pass side in order that I do not have to see it. So it is a choice on how far you hide it, or not, behind the mirror.
