ok guys...so If i want to minimize the lost of electricity from my alternator, should i keep stock accessories pulley (just buy underdrive Crank pulley), or buy the whole UR underdrive pulley set?

I never said anywhere in my posts that they were solid steel. I just said they weren't "harmonic dampeners".

To bim6180, just get the Ultra Sc pulley which is a stock size crank pulley if you are really that concerned. Again, as was said before, the underdrive crank pulley is not set up for vehicles that are supercharged or vehicles with stereo systems over 600 watts RMS. Otherwise you won't really notice a difference in alt output.

 

My old '00 TL has 210,000 miles on it with I,H,P installed before I hit 10,000 miles. Now does anyone need anymore proof? Yes it runs perfectly, no it doesn't burn any oil between 8K mile synthetic oil changes.

 

How many tranny's did you go through to reach 210k?

keeping in mind im the biggest proponant of the crank pulley and belive if done in order of bang for the buck ...K&N with lower resonator removal,crank pulley,headers

 

With all that said...I like what I hear...very knowledgable people from both ends of the spectrum.

 

TCM 01 CL=-S One tranny at 164K miles.....2nd one still OK with oil jet and tranny cooler installed at 164,xxx miles. Engine btw still runs like new and I wasn't easy on it either.

typeR, it was my understanding that the elastomer looked differently. But I guess I wasn't thinking that what you were pointing at was an elastomer. That being said it makes sense that it would be labeled an elastomer. I can't find a picture of what I thought an elastomer looked like but again it seems reasonable to classify that ring inside the pulley as an elastomer, something that would reduce NVH (noise, vibration, harshness). That being said I found my car ran smoother after the pulleys.

 

So is there any negative with getting the lightened stock sized crank pulley?

noise? loss of horsepower at any rpms? anything?

If theres not anything that bothers me, I might be p-ming excelerate for a quote.

 

I guess i can summarize the whole discussion to:
Pros:
- More HP to the wheels
- More Torque to the wheels
- Engine runs smoother
- Engine Revs much faster
- Engine bay looks cooler

Cons:
- It's not free
- Your car is now more prone to Cops

Nice way to summarize it, thats about the same stuff I got out from the whole thread, but just wanted to make sure there isn't anything else that wasn't discussed. I'm always worried about getting buyers remorse after its installed .

Just a couple quick questions though related to the stock sized lighten crank pulley that I got when researching on AZ, please don't flame...

There is no loss of high end horsepower correct? and is there any difference in anything in relation to the pulleys between having it in an auto or in stick?

Anyone else want to chime in just incase we missed something?

Again, just to clarify, lighter pulley / underdrive does not make your engine gain any horsepower (like installing header for say). It's just transferring some of the wasted horsepower back to the wheels (by underdriving components like alternator, etc). So, I don't see there is any way you'll lose any HP or torque in any range of the RPM.

Also, i went to Borders tonight and had some Engine Fundametal reading ...

Just to confirm about harmonic balance (or vibration damper, whatever you want to call it), is NOT on the pulley. This is installed at the end of the crank shaft, usually a small flywheel with rubber and steel. This thing doesn't really turn with the shaft; it's just there to prevent the shaft from twisting (from all those power when the cylinder fires). The twisting force is distributed to this rubber/steel flywheel, resulting in a smooth crank shaft rotation (pardon my term, i'm not a mechanic...this is just from reading the book tonight).

If you think about it, just for argument sake, the pulley IS the harmonic dampers, how can this thing prevents the front end of the shaft from twisting (since it moves faster than the other end of the shaft)?....isn't the pulley moves when the shaft moves?...

When the book explains about this so called "Harmonic Dampers", it didn't even mention anything about the crank pulley.

Anyways, if you're a mechanic and you think that I'm wrong, don't get offended...To the best of my understanding, this is what i concluded from reading this book.

Hi all...have a quick question,

I"ve just bought the Gates belt through NAPA, with the part number from Unorthodox site. Now, my question is, the Alternator belt Part#060441

when i check the gates site, the measurement is: Alternator/AC belt - K060441 (44 5/8” or 1135MM)

now, the one i got from NAPA, same part number, but instead of 44 5/6", it's 44 3/4"..

are there 2 types of this belt???......any of you uses NAPA gates belt and no problem?

Dude umm i think you should go to rockauto.com and buy it there i think its cheaper i've just finish my pulleys installed and it feels great but your question im really not sure about that i was thinking the same thing when i saw the difference but im going to make a wild guess and say yes thats right but any one can correct me now

 

yeah, Josh from excelarate said that it's fine. If i still don't feel good about it, there is a local store here that carries gates belt. But, i've searched the forum, and those people who used NAPA (gates) belt has no problem, plus, NAPA belt IS MADE by Gates

Anyways, anybody else are welcome to chime in if you have a different opinion on these belts

 

did you end up buying the set of three pulleys? and why is it that you are buying new belts?

 

Yes,
I'm getting the sets (3 pulleys). You need new belts because the crank pulley is smaller than stock (underdrive), so the old belt will be too long. Plus, the instruction says that you need these new belts.

 

You need new belt even if you only get the crank pulley (the underdrive one) since it is smaller and the stock belts will be too big.

good deal. i may have to get the crank pulley in the near future(along with the Mugen toys, though i may not feel the latter).

 

Yup those pulleys are great but i really want some comptech headers though but i might get the OE thermo spacers soon

 

I just ordered my SC pulley . Can't wait to get them in.

 

All right...just got back from excelerate...Josh did a great and clean install on my 3 sets UR underdrive pulleys and icebox...As far as gain, i haven't really put that to a test since it's a crappy drive home (rain, heavy traffic, etc). But, one thing for sure, my engine runs smoother. The ECU should be learning in the next couple of days, so i'll update you guys on the gain on Pulleys and Icebox

Again, props to Josh @ excelerate....I recommend him for parts installation if you live in the New England area

Well...here is an update...
I've been driving my car a lot since the install on saturday (hoping to have the ECU learns faster ....).

Well, it's showing the gain slowly as the day goes by, and today, it surprised me a little bit (in a good way). I was starting from stop normal, then decided to go WOT, and i watched my RPM shoot up faster than before....that was pretty cool....

Anyways, I'm really enjoying this mod. Nto really sure what gain from which mod (since i did icebox and pulley and the same time), but i can definitely feel the gain on the lower end. I'll be getting K&N filter for my icebox pretty soon

 

Weird question... I am trying to get my pully off and having 0 luck. Is the bolt right or left handed into the crank?!? Thanks~

 

whats wrong with the filter that came with the ICE box, and where do you get a new K&N one to fit?

 

Some folks just prefer the K&N over the Comptech filter. Here's the cone filter I have. It's a snug fits but it works...
