UPDATE to my 6-speed dilemma

I posted a few days ago about my new silver 6-speed. Great far...no complaints. Well if you remember from the earlier post...I had it towed to the dealer to find out what was going on with my 1 day old car...actually only about 6 hours or so. The next day they told me my clutch was GONE...FLYWHEEL GONE. .. so those needed to be replaced along with some bearings. The car had onl 31 thousand miles on it..how could this have happened??? Anyways my dad refuses to keep a car thats this fragile..considering my circumstances. In my six hours of ownership...only got to drive it about 100 miles and normal driving so I got a feel for it before I let her rip.

Oh clutch related problems aren't covered in warranty..but the dealer we bought from offered to cover all costs. Currently we're trying to reverse the trade-in so I can lug around my 03 CL-P (tranny failed once already) until we figure out what to do.

What do u all suggest? Should we stick it out with this six speed? Thoughts/opinions appreciated.

I think you should keep it. If the clutch is gone its because the previous owner was really bad at driving a manual tranny.

especially if all the repair costs will be covered by the dealer. you aren't losing anything.

would u guys change your minds if an IS250 AWD was a possible replacement? I love the CL..and the CL-s. They don't have amazing handling but both were faster than the IS250.

hell no don't reverse teh trade. Just have the dealership replace it since they said they would.

As stated before the cluth/flywheel being destroyed is almost surely the fault of hte previous owner.

either that or you REALLY suck at manual.

Keep the 6MT. If the selling dealer is covering it, it will be good as new. The 6MT clutch is proven to be a good thing.
Clutch gone at 31K miles is a result of either previous owner, or a defect. There have been a few cases of the clutch wearing out like yours at low milage for no apparent reason. Check the Vin & see if the car had the water pump/tensionor recall done to it. I have a feeling that might be a cause for the clucth wear on these few cars. A result of not getting it fixed per the recall.

Keep it......

The 6speed is not a fragile car, just ask Allmotor. Most likely the person who owned it was not able to drive stick and explains why the car is for sale with that low of mileage.

Def stick it out if the dealer is fixing it at no cost to you. The six speed is not fragile. I agree that someone beat the crap out of the clutch or some odd defect. Youll be as good as new soon

EDIT: damn spdy, you beat me

Keep it... the CLS 6spd was the best 2003 acura model made

Sounds like who ever traded the 6spd in knew the clutch was going and got rid of it because they didn't want to do the repairs. Also sounds like they didn't know how to drive a stick. Some honda clutches will last 150K miles and more.

I've got 42K miles on my 6spd, and the clutch is fine...

Please explain how the water pump/tensioner recall will effect the clutch?

Don't really know. It's just a thought to check out.
I imagine the clutch wouldn't be effected, but maybe the flywheel/crankshaft. Which would lead to a clutch going bad.

I've got 102k on my clutch with no problems, and I learned to drive on the car, so the clutch should be fine after replacement. As everyone has said, it is the result of a bad driver before you. Definately keep it.

If it were me, I wouldn't want to keep a car that was driven so badly as to do that much damage to the clutch, flywheel and bearings in only 31k+ miles.

I have an '03 CLS 6MT that has CT everything (but still has stock clutch/flywheel) that was dyno'd at 305/262 WHP/TQ. I have over 54k miles on it and have driven it hard occassionally and haven't had any issues --- knock on wood...

If they will replace it for free, definately keep it. I've had my 6-speed for 3 weeks now and I look forward to driving the car everyday.

Hopefully it was just a defect that caused the clutch to go out and not abuse, but I would still keep it either way.

CT i/sc/h/full-catback. The boost was measured at 3.9 PSI peak. Car was dyno'd at CT with an outside temp of 60 degrees at low humidity.

ON the clutch issue... everyone is talking about how "they might not have known how to drive a stick".... The 6 MT in the CLS and the TL is not the easiest clutch to get used to, the person could have literally never took the time to actually learn how to drive THIS particular clutch, on THESE cars.

i'd keep the cl-s.

hard to find a cl-s 6mt anywhere nowadays.

given the fact that your dealership will replace the parts free of charge; it sounds like a win-win situation for you...

Thanks for everyones inpout again..if it were my call I would have kept the car most likely.
I think we're doing the IS250 AWD

A rare CLS 6 speed with a brand new dealer installed and paid for clutch shipped away. That's crazy to loyal CLers

This is what happens when parents buy your cars

I can say when I was 18 I wasn't driving an acura, but at least it was mine and I choose whether I kept it or not.

I didn't even have a car.

That sad news. Maybe someone here will pick it up.

Pushed nearly 500hp on the stock clutch for nearly a year and no issues.... stick with it especially since they are fixing it for you!
