Are you sure you did not mean the odometer?

It is simple... you can disconnect the speed sensors. But beware, it will throw a CEL and set the rev limiter to 5500rpm.

I know on older cars you could do it but I thought on the newer cars that it was also recorded in the ECU.

Wouldn't that throw off a lot of things, especially if you have navi?

Just because its illegal to unhook your odometer, the information should be legal and available. just because you know how-to, does not mean you will do it.

It is available, what the heck are you talking about. Should Honda/Acura send a notice to all owners with directions on how to do this?? If someone wants to they should learn how it works and change it.

It can be done (disconnecting the odometer) but I will not for obvious reasons reveal what I may or may not know about the subject .However it is not simple so better you leave this one alone .

So if you murder someone but can get any with it that's cool?
It's against the law and also immoral when you consider how you're affecting the safety of subsequent buyers of a car.

An you're an ASSHOLE !!!

I can’t believe this topic still come up here from time to time.
Just think if somebody here bought a car that was found to be rolled back or disconnected for a year or two.
You guys would be lighting the torches and demanding the previous owner be strung up by his BALLS.

Odometer fraud is just as bad as outright vandalism.
It doesn’t hurt the dealer, it hurts the next OWNER who pays much more then the car is worth.

how did the murder get in here? its your car, do what you want. if you are a buyer, get it inspected for odometer fraud. if you don't, then its your problem. if you are still not sure, don't buy a used car. whatever. maybe you want to give those people an electric chair?

I have known people who had some high $$ cars & have done this. I saw how they treated them, then connected it back before they sold it. They just don't care who if anywone gets the car next. And they continue to do it. In fact 1 has a switch hidden in the dash that switches it on & off in a Range Rover, so when he goes into a dealer he can switch it back on & no one knows. That's why I would never do it.

True, but when you sell or trade the car and misrepresent its mileage THAT’S when you become the criminal.

It is a valid parallel. Just because you can get away with something doesn't make it acceptable. We all share the moral responsibility to conduct our lives in a manner which does not impact or hurt others intentionally. This is willing and intentional fraud.

If done properly, it would not be detectable with an inspection making your point moot.

That's lying, cheating, and stealing in my book. I had a pretty good golfing bud that disconnected the odo on his late 80's chevy cavalier. That POS had 130K on it and showed 50K. I wish he hadn't of told me this over a beer on the 19th hole. My old world standards on how to conduct oneself had a tough time with this and I don't see ol' Corky much anymore.

Ethics - doing what's right whether someone is looking or not.

Ethics is something you have or not. Those that have it understand it and appreciate it. To those that have it, it's a priceless comodity. To those that DON'T have it, this point will be waisted on them.

From this thread, I now have a list of people I won't do business with on the Black Market forum

Heck, disconnecting the odometer is a lot better than some of the things I have heard and seen with used cars. A colleague had a check engine light come on and stay on in his 300ZX twin-turbo. Dealer quoted crazy amounts of money for whatever the problem was (I honestly forget what the exact problem was). So my colleague went into the dash and broke the check engine light, put it back together, and sold the car. If the buyer had checked the diagnostics, it would show up, but otherwise, they got hosed. I don't plan on buying a used car from this guy (or anyone else, for that matter).

though this is not ethically right to do it's not too difficult from what I've heard.

locate the speed sensors and disconnect them... I think your revs will probably be limited and your speedo obviously won't work anymore. Since the speed sensors show no movement then the miles don't rake up at all. This is just information I got through a friend. I'm not sure how correct he is or even if the speed sensors on this car effect the mileage. It couldn't be something completely different. This was information he gave me from doing it on his sister's '00 Prelude.

I have however seen the bypassing of the odo on a big 15 passenger rental on a long road trip. Really easy to do by just bypassing a fuse in that thing. I did't do it myself but I think they bypassed one of the fuses on the fusebox near the floor. They wired it to a switch so at any point we could turn the switch back on and turn the dashbaord back on to check gauges. Newer cars though i think not only record it on the gauges but also on the ECU. The speed sensor disconnect is the only foolproof method of getting the odo off.

Hope this cures your curiousity. I wouldn't do it though. It's just not really right.

If I had a leased vehicle I would think about doing it... Fuggin leases, "you can only drive 5,000 miles this year, anything over is .10 a mile...."

This is why I am always reluctant to buy used cars, you never know what was done to them. If you wanna buy a used car can you take it to the dealer first and have them check the ECU to make sure the odometer is right?

Nope, the ECU does not store total mileage. Otherwise when a new ECU was put in place it would need to be programmed with the old mileage.

That would be the fuse for the dash. On long highway trips, you set the cruise control, shut the dash off, and use the cruise control to limit your speed. I spend alot of time on the highway and this would work well for me. I thought about it with my last car but figured the difference in the trade-in value wasn't enough to sell my soul to the devil.

BTW Dude, don't bother trying to sell your car here now, eh!

Oh by the way, i did mean odometer.

To be honest with you, i wanted to see how easy it was to watch out for it. I remember my friend doing it to his land rover once on a lease, but that was about 6 years ago and who knows what could have changed since then.

But from what i gather, it is :

1. Easy and quite possible.
2. Activly going on?!?!?!?!?! *still unsure
3. Impossible to detect!?!?!?!?!

sorry guys, but i'm still without a clue.
