The owner's manual says that we can't use any chains on the type S.

Are "alternative traction devices" like tire socks (https://shopautosock.mcgeecompany.co...from=215-50r17) okay to use? Anyone have any recommendations?

 

Why would you specifically not be able to use chains on the Type S but not the base?

 

Something to do with traction control, or clearance to the brakes I assume.

 

I don't see any reason you wouldn't be able to. Manual transmission doesn't have traction control anyways.

 

Clearance between the rim and brakes would be the only concern I forsee.

 

What kind of chains are you putting in your car that get attached in there? There are plenty that only hook externally on the outside of the tire without coming anywhere near the brakes.

Here was a previous discussion. You may want to worry about clearance if you're lowered but if you keep them tight you should be fine. May want to consider 16" instead.
