Turbocharging my 6spd!

I have been pondering the S/C for my 6spd for a while now and have come to the conclusion that it is far too expensive for the power gains. Consequently, I am going to attempt building a Turbo Kit for my car.

I forsee several hurdles that must be overcome:

(1) Turbo placement. A twin-turbo approach is nearly impossible as there is no room under each manifold for a T3/T4 to sit - let alone to add two wastegates!
(2) A single-turbo can fit right at the A-pipe (just before the catalytic convertor) along with a wastegate stuffed in there. This allows me to use the Comptech Manifolds and down-pipe as-is.
(3) The intercooler placement is straight-forward, although the piping from the compressor to the intercooler might get tricky (since the turbo is in the back of and under the engine). The intake-side from the intercooler with a blow-off is pretty straight-forward.
(4) A boost-dependant FPR and fuel-systems is straigt-forward.
(5) With the proposed turbo-placement, the oil-feed and oil-return lines will be straight-forward to plumb

I will initially boost 6psi.

I built a similar kit for my '98 prelude and the total cost was ~$2500. I think a kit for my 6spd would approach $3K, but it is definately more worth it than the S/C. There is no tricky manifold design, and that helps! At 8psi, the 2200cc DOHC VTEC prelude motor made 312 at the wheels. I estimate about 325 at the wheels at 6psi on the '03 6spd.

I have to get my BOM ready and get a quote for the A-pipe modification and intercooler piping. Everything else will be easy.

I estimate the Feb-March time-frame for all this to be completed, knowing me!

If you accomplish this, I might be asking you to build me one as well, that is if you will? Good luck and how the hell did you get enough traction to run a 13.9 on stock tires....ive tried my damnest and still cant get a decent 60' mark to break 14.3??? I guess practice makes perfect.

Oh yeah... and

If you open the hood it will look like just an ice-box sitting on there AND you can access the spark-plugs

Awesome, good luck! Turbo on this car will be great. WOn't have to deal with traction issues in low RPMs like the S/C and the engine should increase output as it approaches redline

congratulations, you're the most recent of 1897897 memebrs who swore they would build a custom turbo, none of which have been heard from since. So forgive me if i'm skeptical. If you're really willing to try the J30A1 turbo kit is on EBay so go ahead and buy it and let's see if you can walk the walk as well as you talk.

Good luck and I look forward to seeing it.

But I can see many potential hurdles. That will use plenty of piping, more than most applications which will degrade the potential somewhat. Also, putting the turbo that low will warrant some protection and are you going for gravity draining for the oil?? That also will be a worry.

I also assume that you will use an aditional bracket to further support the turbo??

Again, good luck as this will be a serious undertaking...

Turbo Mounting

The oil-feed (usually) is tapped near the drain-bolt of the oil-pan. The return line can really be anywhere... usually its on one of the 'unused' ports on the head.

The Turbo needs to be bracketted to the motor (possibly near the rear motor-mount) in some way. Obviously it can't be mounted to the motor-mount it self as the motor will torque one way while the mount remains still and then the turbo will be hitting the car behind me!

There might be about 2psi of boost loss by the time anything gets to the TB, so maybe an 8psi spring on the waste-gate might be better. Adding a Greddy Profec or some boost-controller is an option, but expensive.

Looks like that Accord kit has the turbo right in line with the A-pipe as well. $5000 is a rip-off!!!! You can add a protective shield (like a catalytic-convertor-cover) around the turbo and oil-lines under the car if necessary.
