Question transmission fluid change questions!

K so I was wondering what is the best auto transmission fluid for our cars?

Royal Purple ATF??

And should I just do a simple drain and fill every time I do my oil? That's probably the smartest thing to do eh?

stay with honda/acura atf z1 i thing doing a drain and fill every time u change ur oil is a bit much. how often do u change it?
id say do the 3x3 every 20k or so. and change the external filter at that time.

i was told 30k do a 3x3 and a filter change.

see i just got my trany rebuilt like 16000kms ago or so. and I was thinking if just do a drain and fill every time i do an oil change (trans filter I will do every 20-30k). I figure my trans has a GOOD chance of lasting a super long time. If i stay on top of the clogging.

Cause I JUST did a 3x3 on the family 02 MDX and it was AMAZING. I use mobile oil stuff, and then on the last change I used some royal purple. the car when in gear would move up the rpms by 2-300 it was soo screwed... i thought it needed a rebuild asap.

The fluid was BURNT(smell) brown(color)! and thick! thickk

so that just shows me how CRUCIAL it is to be paranoid.

Like I am paranoid about my engine oil. this experience has made me even more paranoid now about my trans fluid/filter

So I have no clue when the last owner of my car changed the filter, or even the fluid. If I were to drain out the fluid, what exactly should I look for, to see how much it's been used? Should I just change out the filter right now, for the hell of it?

HELL yes if you dunno what the history is, start from scratch.

It will be like a new tranny bro I swear u dunno how happy u'll be.

I think I am gonna do the filter and at least 1 oil change to my tranny just because I can.. since I got the fresh build I'm sure there's some initial break-in gunk that should be flushed out. gotta stay on top of that shyt.

i bought the filter for the MDX which is the same as our CL's but there is SO little clearance on the MDX i couldn't get the 2 bolts off to free the one side of the filter. So i may just use it on mine sometime soon.

Well that's kind of the thing, it already DOES feel like a knew trans. I mean it shifts clean and smooth pretty much 100% of the time, even in 18 degree weather I bought the car when it had 70k miles on it, and I can tell the previous owner replaced the trans (or had it rebuilt... blue bolts, etc) so I'm betting the transmission is fairly new.

but yeah was just curious if you guys really thought I should start from scratch

well i'm gonna say yes, it definitely cannot hurt.

Some people are good and dont change it for a while and then when they do it causes weird problems cause gunk is lodged in the wrong place. So better b safe than sorry. I'm gonna do it this weekend

if the fluid is really dark, leave it. changing the fluid will cause u more problems and wear out even faster.

I didn't know the CL's had an external tranny filter. I thought it was located inside the transmission???

Great, I'd have been better off not knowing this, ha. Now I'm going to have to go out into the 25 degree weather and tackle the job this weekend.

Anyone have any pointers on how to do this.

Also, when replacing the tranny fluid, I had a shop do this for just the cost of the atf since I had the tires put on there. How small of a funnel do I need to fit into the oil jet hole??

My tranny has 150K miles on it with the oil jet, Ive only replaced 6 quarts of oil in it over that period.

Just goes to show how you never know from one tranny to the next.

6 quarts of oil!!! which is a 3x2 technically... that is TERRIBLE bro, ur supposed to do it every 90000KMs and that's dealer spec, which is WAY OVER RATED. it should be more like 30-40K

buddy do a 3x3.

only thing is:
u gotta put back the intake system and everything so u can drive the car to go through all the gears R,1,2,3,4,5 after u do 1 change.

took me almost 2 hrs to do the mdx since it's in my cramped garage and i gotta work in such close quarters.

Personally I would replace the filter after the 2nd change is complete (before u go drive it), because the 1st change will be so! dirty i bet, u will feel like a POS how u've been treating ur car. and all that crap would go through the filter if u throw it on 1st.

But either way u NEED a new filter. so go to the DLR asap.

Funnel u need one that's like 10inches-1ft tall and the spout should be less than 1inch on the outside so it can sit inside the jet spot.

simply remove the 12mm bolt attaching the jet to the trans and use both hands and lift vertically hard (but watch ur hands!) it can snap loose and then u lose ur grip and start donating blood lol. so just beware.

there is no slack on the jet kit so just try to keep it straight while u yank it out... u won't break anything, this is what i did on the mdx.

For filling, get a container and let everything drain in there, MARK exactly where the fluid is, close tranny fluid drain plug, wash out container, and fill with new honda fluid, and poor it into where the jet kit is/was (this is tedious!!) the better the funnel the lless of a bitch it will be. so find a long funnel with no more than a 1 inch spout. mine was like 3/4 probably and it was perfect... so i'd go for 3/4 if u can.

the plug to drain is at the bottom, simply put a ratchet in there and turn and she comes loose, no problems. I used my foot and kicked it to initially break her loose, she was on as tight as a nunz ****.

I saved my MDX doing this so... YEA every 20-30K i will do it now on the MDX (cause she's the family/company work vehicle/ hot tub tower)
and every 30K i will do it on my CL, accept for the fact I am doing is soon since i got a fresh build and want everything to be mint mint mint forever. :-) better to be anal and SAFE, then careless and sorry. u know what i mean

let me know how she goes bro, i guarantee it's worth that hassle GUARANTEE.

P.S ur tranny filter was not changed since it is a 60$ part for the DLR so they definitely didn't "throw that in for u" on the house

Back when I had an Auto, I would use Sea Foam Trans-tune 20 miles before I changed it, then I would use this.

Okay so I just looked at my tranny, for the first time. Someone wrote on it, New 05/07. So im assuming they changed it in '07. This is good for me, does anyone know if this tranny is alleviated from the problems that plagued the original?

The fluid didnt look too dark. When I wiped it off on a the white clothe, it had like a light orange hue to it, is that the way it should look? So im good to go with the change?

yep u either have the bolt or the oil jet.

and NO the newer trannies still needed to be rebuilt. They all have the same problem technically.. clogged internal filter.

yes it is less prone to failure/clogging, but that's not gonna save u in the long run if u don't do the maintenance.

I bet if everyone changed their fluid from the day they got their cars in every 30K there would be very few tranny failures. is my guess

zac, ur tranny is pretty new then.. so keep on these changes and u should not have anything catastrophic happen to ur trans

Just as something that I find Hilarious it says it is for acura 01-03cl,tl etc , and it has honda all over it LMAO

Wow, I just called the dealer to see if they had the filter because I thought I might as well change it and they had no idea what I was talking about. I had to argue with them to make them look it up and finally see that there is an external filter. They just kept saying no such thing, theres an internal but no external, when I kept saying there is an external one. They dont have it in stock either.

Should I wait to change the filter and do it together with the change, or should I just not change it this time?

Just saw you were hit fluffy, that sucks!

And done. Didnt take me too long. But what a difference a simple fluid change. Huge improvement in slowing to a standstill. It used to be really jerky coming down from like 50-0mph now it is alot more smooth. Overall improved shifting!

I like Amzoil Universal ATF. It's synthetic and a Z-1 rated replacement.
