Transmission Cooler

Long story short... bought a cl, needs a trans swap.

I know our car has a transmission cooler, but it does not do much apparently and I was wondering what aftermarket brands of transmission coolers have you all installed? Did you completely replace the oem one or did you add onto it?

might sound like a stupid question, I haven't done much digging around under the hood with the horrible weather and search didn't turn up too much either.

Our car does not have a transmission cooler skip. Hence why people put them on. I even went as far as transmission temp gauge and special internals on the transmission. Car has been solid for 50000 miles so far so I'm loing it.

I stand corrected; I was going off of what I had read in another thread, but no one ever mentioned there that we do not have one. In any case, what brand of transmission cooler did you install? Quite curious as it seems to have done you some good.

B&M Supercooler p/n 70264. Still, the issue with the CL's transmission is not excessive heat so it's not going to solve that problem. Still can't hurt to add.

Heat is the problem it always is. The reason heat is the problem is because our transmissions don't get enough fluid to clutch packs. The fluid cools the clutches.. Therefore heat is the issue. I added the cooler to take away heat from the fluid which in turn drops the temp of all the components inside the transmission. Yes the cooler does not make the trans problem solved but it definitely is helping a lot. That in combination with the new internals I bought from levelten should be enough to prevent the trans from taking another massive dump

But cooling the fluid with the cooler still WONT help the trans. The problem like you said is it simply cant get enough fluid to the clutch packs to keep them cool. It doesnt matter if you cool the fluid to 30deg. If the clutchpack cant get enough of it, it will STILL overheat what fluid does get there. I had 4 failures WITH a trans cooler.

Exactly. Additionally, you do risk over-cooling the fluid. Transmission fluid is meant to be held in a specific temp range. Cooling it too much can cause issues too. In most cars the transmission fluid can be run through the radiator to help either get it up to temp or cool it when needed. Adding too much cooling can have a negative effect on the transmission and cause it not to function properly leading to early failure.

In the end with these cars, a tranny cooler isn't going to correct a design flaw.

I got the levelten internals I honestly believe that's my saving grace.. And the temp gauge lets me know when it's over 180 and if it is I drive grandma style. The trans will get to 240f without a cooler, on a summer day with some hard driving. I took the cooler off and did exactly that and got to some scary temps... The cooler helps a lot... Knot in traffic... But when u actually drive it cools everything Down a lot.. U need a gauge to see. It lets u know when u can pound on it. Simply on 0-100 mph will add 15 degrees on the gauge. It's quite nice
