TRANNYY on ALL ACURAS
TRANNYY on ALL ACURAS
So this is what got me wondering about trannys that cars like CL-s TL-s MDX and even the old model TL... well its stated that all of these cars have tranny problems just like ours... while lookin into my friend's TLs- it has over 100k and no tranny redone, my friend's mom's mdx- 87k now (seen since elementry skool) with no tranny redone... and to all the TL-s and CL that old ppl drive on the road... i dont think all of em have tranny problems.
SO IS IT JUST HOW WE RAGG our cars? and beatin down on our trannys?
maybe if we drive it like how luxury cars should be, would it still break down on us?

To answer the question:
I don't think it has to do with the way you drive it. I have over 110K on my tranny with no problems, while my co-worker that has an Odyssey van with the same recalled tranny that has blown up on him twice. His wife drives the kids around in it is all, while I drive my car like I stole it.
Just my
Jabo
The way I understood when I was reading about it after mine failed was that fundamentally it is a lubrication/heat issue. All trannies have the design flaw and all have a "chance" of failing.
I also remember reading that repetitive shifts between 2nd and 3rd gear can accelerate the problem, so lots of gunning the car and slamming on the brakes causing a downshift from 3 to 2 could cause the problem to manifest itself quicker.
All that being said, in my 03 CL-S the transmission went around 38000 and I drive the vehicle hard. My mom drives a 99 TL extremely conservatively and hers went at somewhere around 30000. I think the odds of a failure happening can be increased by aggressive driving, but there is always a good chance its going to go.
And on a side note, I don't see the CL as the type of car one buys to drive like a grandmother and enjoy the luxury. Especially the CL-S, not that the suspension is extremely stiff, but I would much prefer a softer ride if I wanted luxury.

well, my cls' tranny gave out at about 87k.
I've wondered the same thing. I think that some of our members do drive their cars harder than a old lady, but I also think a transmission should be able to take the amount of abuse without shitting the bed.
Trending Topics
my 98 accord V6 just had it's tranny replaced no charge through good will from honda we are the original owners at the time it had 48K now 50K and my freind there head tech said when i told him i was getting a tranny how many have you had...from the 98 accord to the 99+TL oddesseys,MDX,and CL all have less than acceptable trannys and honda will go the extra mile if asked on all of the above mentioned vehicals

They put most of their engineering in the motors not the trannys.
Why... I have no Idea...
It seems like this topic will never die around here. It sucks that anyone has to deal with tranny issues on any car. I have a 99 TL with 167,XXX on the 1st tranny and a 01 CLS with 58,xxx on 1st tranny. On the TL I change the tranny fluid every 15K miles and the CL every other oil change. Fuild is never burned or dirty on either car.
So the odds are unknow, but as TypeR said, most Acura dealers are more than happy to take care of the problem, or at least the ones that my friends work at are.

I've wondered the same thing, but I've read post that speak to the contrary. I think we should start a registry by VIN here on the board of failed and good trannies to see if we can draw some correlation between manufacturing countries/dates(or any other criterion) that will tell us a little more about which trannies are failing and possible come up with a why.
And, the CLS is not to be driven as just a luxury car. The CLP maybe, but the Type S was manufactured to perform.
what about the replacement ones? wouldn't it make sense to come up with something like Dr.Evil and replace it only once instead of 2-3 tranny's like for some people. It would cost Acura/Honda much less to do that than blindly rebuild and replace a shitload of them multiple times.
My car's in the shop right now getting a replacement and I'm afraid it might fail anytime soon again because that seems to be the trend.
I really wonder how many people on this forum for example kept their 2nd tranny for at least 70k-80k
