I've actually had quite a bit of experience with the 318 and can tell you first hand it is one the more reliable engines. I have over 170,000 on mine and have tons of other Grand Cherokee owners on a jeeps message board who have twice that. If you ask owners of grands, I think you will find that they rarely have problems. Maybe the people you know just got a couple of lemons??
The 4.7 really hasn't be around long enough to get accurate reliability info. Four years I believe. However, it is a more efficient engine thant the 5.2( better gas, more power) but lower torque.

BTW, I have often heard that the original 318 was help designed by John Deere. Anybody ever heard of this?

I'm not surprised!!! As soon as you buy the car and drive it off the lot (so basically your speedometer is 0 milage), you just lost 30% of the value you purchased with. That is a BRAND NEW car you just bought two seconds ago....for a 1 year old car, that's no big surprise.
