Track night

Went to the track last night. Partly cause it was 45-50 degrees in south FL which is so rare it's the 2nd time in 7 years I have seen it this cold here & it fell on a test & tune night.

It was a american V8 parade. Nothing but Corvettes, mustangs, SRT's 8's, & Chargers. Some supped up SRT4 neon's as well.
The few imports were all boosted. Evo's, a few Mazda's.

I felt so out of place & shammed with my car there.

Almost no one was running above 14. All that V8 powered mania running 11-13 et's all night.

This track is 45 miles from me so I drove a bit. Got there at 6. Waited till almost 7 to even get to stagging cause you have to be inspected. Once there it was another 15 minutes of waiting. Didn't get my 1st run till 7:10.

My times sucked. I just couldn't get any traction in 1st gear.
30PSI all wheel hop
28PSI all wheel hop
25PSI some wheel hop
22PSI some traction
20 PSI more traction, but my speed suffered cause that was too low & dragged
I just don't understand how you guys are able to run good times. Maybe it's the car, the tires, me, or the track. I just don't know.
I tried several ways of launching, & just could not hook up right.
But I watched all these other cars able to get traction, & I'm wondering why can't I do it?
I was trapping lower then I expected at 97-98. My best time was 14.4 with the 22psi run. My best 60 was 2.25. which was the 20PSI run.
My worst numbers were 14.7 with 2.38 60. The 30PSI run.
I know the power is there with the dyno's I've done.
I drove home mad, & confused. Makes me want to dump the car & get a Vette.

I can only offer a little bit of advice since ive never had my CLS at the track.

On the street if I launch with any RPM I get wheel hop. I have found that launch around idle and then just floor it I will normally take off pretty well minus some wheel spin.

There are soo many variables that could be causing your confusion. Tires, Suspension, Track, etc...

In the end the CLS isnt a drag car, if you want good drag times get a RWD, automatic car with lots of torque

the motor mounts will help but what we really need are traction bars.

Technique, and practice. It seems to me you are getting too much wheel hop. I'm not familiar with the tires in your sig, but if they are more suited for warmer/dry weather the 45 degrees had a huge effect on the performance. They would need to be heated up to get better traction.

If your motor mounts are weak, that will also cause bad wheel hop. Practice makes perfect, keep going back and you will find what works best.

45 degrees will not call for "warming up" your tires. street tires shouldnt be lit up in the burnout box. it only causes less traction.

fuzzy i know how you feel next to a bunch of v8's that have no problem getting off of the line. i get wheel hop to. the stiffer your suspension, the less wheel hop. try feathering the clutch instead of just dropping it. just an example, rev to 2500 and ride your clutch more so you wont break traction as easy and the wheel hop wont be so violent.

as for the 2.25 60ft. i think it should have pulled a better time. how are your shifts? do you have your 1/8th time?

other than that props for runnin the cl with those badboys, i would have been too embarassed to run.

i would have still run. 14.81 fo life. well, at least that has been my same time for the last 27 runs down the 1320. i would say tires and clutch technique.
drive around the burnout box and just dump the clutch real quick just to clean any shit off of them.

things i can offer are , are you preloading the clutch? u'll use the hand break... let out on the clutch so that it's tryin to move the car foward with about 2500-3000 rpms being held... and the car must be driven to the brink of rev limit... 98 should be good for a 13.9 maybe

I tried different ways of launching. Slamming the gas, feathering the clutch, holding at 1200, 1500 & 2000 rpm's & dropping the clutch.
The only thing that seemed to somewhat work was feathering it off the line. A few feet & once rolling, slam the gas.
I suppose the cold could have effected the tires. They are summer tires & not recommended for cold or snow.

what about this.

i found with my legend, after installing my coilovers (mind you the spring rates are 13/9!!), i get alot better traction. I have the oprotuniting to drive a stock legend also, and first thing i noticed that with both coupes having good tires on them, the stock, losses alot more traction and has alot more wheel hop.

I'm gonna test this season (during autox) with raising my rear end up more, to put a little more weight on the front tires.

remember, with your power, when you launch the front comes up quickly, b/c the weight transfers really quickly to the rear, with weight removed from the front, the tires will break loose easier.

case in point. stock FWD car. place alot of weight in the rear and it'll cause the wheels to hop and break loose easier. same thing as whats happening to you. This actually happens to me, with a stock legend with my tool box in the trunk, now same thing in my legend with my tool box and it doesn't happen.

this is what i recommend to you. also its VERY important to have good tires also that will grip well.

I may go there to practice. Although since it's the only thing in the Miami area, I heard it's always packed.
