Towing my CL-S
Alrght, so I'm moving. About 900 miles. And I don't want to drive my car, plus I need to drive the moving truck.
Penske is the best that I've found as far as price and equipment is concerned. But they have certain specifications for what cars they will allow to be towed with one of their car carriers. Specifically, they don't allow any cars with rim sizes bigger than 16" to be towed on their carrier. The largest tire size that they allow is 265/70-16. Penske is the only one that makes these distinctions for their carriers.
So as I was making my reservation, I entered my car info (2001 CL-S) and they said the car carrier was not available for my car. So I switched my car info to say I had the regular CL (non type S), and they said that the car carrier was available. So I can tow a regular CL, but not a CL-S.
this brings me to my question.... assuming I put my stock wheels back on, should I just tell them I have a regular CL so I can get the carrier? Or should I pay more and go to Uhaul where they don't care about what size my tires are? Is there really that much of a difference in wheel base, overall tire size, etc between the regular CL and the CL-S?

I now drive an accord....
physically the cars are the same, but since the CL has 16" wheels and the type S has 17" that would be the only change they care about. The 16" wheel will have a larger sidewall which may work better for there type of mount. Im assuming there just renting you a tow dolly, but who knows
Check and verify how this device actually towes your car. If it lets the rear tires roll on the ground behind the towing device I wouldn't do it. You could probably rent a car trailer for cheap, and you car will be completely off the road, in which car type or wheel size would have no bearing

No, I'm trying to rent a carrier, where my car will be completely off the ground. Penske won't let me rent that or the dolly that just lifts the front wheels. I don't want the dolly so I don't care about it, but I can't understand why it would be a safety issue to put my CL-S on their carrier.

Makes no sense to a 265/70/16 has a larger overall diameter than our stock tires or even 235/45's that I run. No use reasoning with them since this is already their policy. You'll have to look at someone else. Let us know if they all have this policy as I may need a carrier as well.

So, should I just tell them it's a CL-P, not a CL-S? and use their carrier for my car without their knowledge?
Other companies don't seem to have this policy for their carriers.

Alright, so I called them about their retarded policy. Turns out they send their car carrier specs to car manufacturers, and the car companies make the decision about which of their cars will fit the carrier, and send the list back to Penske.
What I still don't understand is..... the CL-P has a stock tire size of 205/60R16, while the CL-S has a stock tire size of 215/50R17, which is .42 inches smaller in diameter than the CL-P, and only .39 inches wider than the CL-P. So how can Acura say that their CL-P will fit on the carrier while the CL-S will not? especially when the largest tire size that the harness straps will accomodate is 265/70R16 (which are 5" bigger in diameter than my 235/35 and my 19" ronjons)
Anyway, when it comes down to it, I'm just going to tell them my car is a CL-P if I have to. I don't see any reason why my car won't work on their carrier.

Thats what I would do.......
However just pray something doesn't happen to your car of the trailer, because insurance won't cover it since you used it outside their specs

what if something happens over the 900 miles(thats alot!!)
I would either suck it up and pay the extra for the u-haul, or buy some cheap ass, $100 for the set, 16" rims from a junk yard and throw them on the fronts.
can,t see why that is their policy, but so be it. there muxt have been some instances to have them say that-they wouldn't just pull a number out of mid air like that
where you moving from/to?

if your using a carrier or "car trailer" and the wheels are going to be completely off the ground, I'd do it too. Who cares what size the tires are? A 265/70R16 tire is WAY bigger than the CL-S and almost as big as the tires on my full size K5 Blazer, so I figure it should accomidate you just fine.

It's a pretty straight trip, very flat, very easy. So I'm not worried about anything happening to the trailer that would be my fault and require my coverage.
