Touch up paint?

I always try to park in the most far corner of any parking lot simply to avoid the headaches of dings, dents, etc. Well, apparently some jackass managed to somehow scratch my front bumper in practically empty parking lot. The 2 scratches are about 3 inch long and the paint has been scratched straight to the primer. Was just wondering if anyone has a good idea as to the best form/application of touch up paint on a black CL-S.

the dealership sells touchup paint. also most autoparts stores sell it as well. i use it for touchup alot. they are paint pens, but they have a touchup brush in them too.

I had some really bad ones on my rear quarter panels. I used a brush and it looked like crap. I ended up filling in the scratches and the areas on the side and then came back when the paint was half dried and using my finger nail to remove the excess paint. It looked a lot better than just using a brush.

I think the pen would be a lot easier.

I also saw a guy at a body shop use a business card to do it and it actually came out pretty good. He just used the corner with a small amount of paint. And then he would rip a new edge and keep going. It put a lot less paint than just a brush.

for minor scratches just use a lil rubbing compound.. but since urs is at the primer level.. then i would go to the dealer to get the touch up paint if you are anal about the exact color match.

I got my touch up paint from the dealer. They had to order it and when I went to pick it up, they didn't charge me for it at all. FTW!

+1 for the brush being a bitch though.

If it's scratched straight to the primer like you say don't even bother. Touch up paint isn't going to make it any better. May make it look worse. I tried the pen & the brush & they both suck. I have scrapes on my front bumper & after some claying & waxing they don't look that bad. I'd try that before touch up paint.

Depending on the scratch, the pen may or may not be a good idea, I've got a couple that I'm going to try it on, just called the dealer and they have the pen in stock for about $9, which is a better deal than ebay

I have a silver 2002. I have to get the pen asap. Paint chipped off a bit on the trunk and there's a sign of rust or maybe just metal. Gotta get the touch up paint on before it gets worse.

If you have a little nick to bare metal A trick is to wash the area with Dawn dish soap to get the wax off, then apply a few light coats of clear nail poilsh. Works the same as the touch up paint, but will not look like like it. It will fill in the nick & protect it from rusting.

I just got my pen/brush from the dealer.

I used the brush on areas with lots of dings/scraps: the left edge of my drivers mirror that was scraped up, and the corner of the passanger door (passengers aren't nearly as careful when opening the doors, my passenger door was dinged like crazy but the drivers side only had 2)

The pen worked really well for almost everything else! I tried the toothpicks but think that unless the nick is REALLY small, the pen is still easier

Matchbook

I really dislike both the brush and the pen. A trick I picked up from an auto body guy was to use the ragged end (end that was ripped off) of a match... not a wooden one, but the paper match books And you don't brush... you dab.

Grayson... good luck touching up silver. I used to have a silver CL and it was a bitch to match. The touch up was always darker.... and really visible! Apparently the metalflake in the paint can really impact the colour. I ended up experimenting with non stock silver paints to get closer to the Satin Silver.

HOw about stone chips on the front hood and stuff... can i buff/rub those out with a scratch remover or should i just stick with the pen or brush? Or even better yet, use the pen and then buff it out afterwards? Winter is coming, Toronto, and i would like to cover up all expose chips before the snow and salt arrives.

Stone chips will generally not buff out as they are down to metal... and in our wretched Canadian climate you need to cover the damage with touch up paint. Buffing can smooth out the touch up job, but be careful... as you can easily buff off the touch up.

I have a pretty good idea what your winters are like in TO... I have been there lots on business. In Alberta there is no way that that the stock Michelins would work.

I have a seperate set of 16 inch rims that I have winter tires mounted on. I went with the Nokian... I used to have the Alpen Pilot on my Accord and the Nokians are an order of magnitude better... especially on ice. I have the 6MT so I need all the traction I can get.

Hope that we have a long fall... and a mild winter.
