torque converter

to take out the stock torque converter in our cars would you have to take out the transmission off the car? i just spoke to a tech from levelten and he said that the torque converter will give about 18 to 20 horsepower, i just have to take out mine and send it to them.........is it a mission to take the converter out?

UH NO that would not be better than headers, headers give 32hp vs. Torque con 18-20hp IF its true.

I can't imagine you getting any hp from a torque converter. What you'll probably get is a higher torque multiplier and a higher stall speed. You should only feel it on the launch. Your tranny will run quite a bit hotter too...

Good point... Has anyone installed a trans temp gauge? Heat kills...

Agreed.

The torque converter only increases your stall speed so your flash stall is higher, thus your car starts putting down power later in the powerband where there is more torque. If you're having trouble launching then this will be a worthwhile mod, otherwise, I don't see to much of a point in it. I know accord V6's and TLs bog somewhat at lauch, but I don't know about type S's.

I've priced the install with a friend. He says about $300. The guy on SHO who got his installed confirmed it.

As far as the tranny temp goes, I would do three things:

1. Switch to B&M Trick shift ATF or Hurst ATF, it will make for quicker more precise shifts, and cooler transmission temperatures

2. Install a tranny temperature gauge.

3. Install a tranny cooler (mad cheap, some $40 for most kinds, but if you wanna get crazy they can run up to $200) Plus you can install it yourself with a little know how.
