Tire plugging

I have a screw stuck in my tire. I remember hearing there are a couple ways to plug the tire. What is the best most effective way?

have a professional dismount the tire, and patch it from the inside.

DO NOT use a plug only!!! Tire must be dismounted and checked for damage. A patch will be applied to the inside of the tire. Costco will do this for free. Again, DO NOT USE A PLUG TO REPAIR A TIRE!!!

What's wrong with plugs? I had other tires on cars plugged with no problems ever. No one I know has had any problem with a plugged tire. I have had a few repairs where the tire was taking off the rim, & patched from inside.

I just had one of my Toyo's patched. I ran over a 3/4 inch bolt. I'm still a little weary of it but he said he put a big patch on it. I believe he put a plug in it as well. Air was gushing out of the tire when I ran it over. Went flat in about 20 seconds.

Plugs work as long as it is not on the sidewall! Patch over/under plug is of course better..

You will wear out the plug as the treads wear and could cause the tire to exploid. Patch from inside will stick from inside and will not fall off and will not wear out. Also the patch will cover a bigger surface area that will experience less pressure compare to the plug.

First time I have ever heard so many people give the correct answer for the plug question. One more reason to add......the outside plug tends to leak, might not be immediatly but it will happen. During my schools days, I fixed a few tires with outside patches (customer complained about a leak) and replaced them with inside ones. No complaints.

I have used plugs for some years and have done at least 3-4 repairs during that time and never have a problem. I agree that the inside patch is a better way of doing it. If you have a big puncture like some one posted earlier(3/4")bolt, you have to get a new tire Also nothing can repair sidewall damage. I always have plugs in my trunk. Its a quick way of get you moving again. You can always patch it later if you wish, but the plug will get you going right away

Another word of advise. With a pluged only tire, do not try to find where the fuel cut off kicks in.
