tire cables

Has anybody found an acceptable set of tire cables to be used in snowy conditions for the 2001 Type S CL? The manual says no chains or cables for the Type S. I assume this is a clearance issue. What do you guys in Midwest and East do in the snow/ice. I need the cables only in possible emergency conditions or when required by the DOT when going over the mountain passes here in Washington State. I hate to buy smaller wheels, tires and chains for for such a limited use. Any ideas? Thanks

You can’t use chains on the stock Type-S rims.
They will scratch the crap out of them.

I have a dedicated set of 16” snow Rims/Tires from a TL.

You would think that a dealer in San Francisco would bring this up since so many people drive to Tahoe (and chains/cables are often REQUIRED). I am really ticked off now that I have to rent a car when I go to Tahoe in the winter.

Chains are not advised but I don't really know about cables. I used them years ago on a rear drive BMW Bavaria and they worked great. They don't have the slop that chains have.

There are no chains, cables or belts the can be used on the CL Type S that I could find. In fact there are many cars with performance tires and large rims (17) that cannot use these devices either so it is not just an Acura problem. There is a plastic clete device that goes on the outside of the wheel only but they are expensive ($300) and have a stupid looking hub attached to the wheel at all times. A good set of all season radials (M&S) will usually do the job on any maintained mountain pass. If the DOT says chains REQUIRED for cars you're just SOL till they grade it.

Here in Chicago when the snow get deep and the ice is out there, we just drive REALLY CAREFULLY and as slow as conditions require. Common sense, that's all.

But, we don't have any steep grades around here. I know what you're getting at. Never understood why they got rid of studded tires.
