Tips on persuading a delaer for a cheaper price

HI
Im planning to go buy a CL-S but I first want to know what are some tips to get a better price or more accessories in your purchase. This will be the first time I'll buy a brand new car from a dealer! Help me out with any tips that you guys went through!

Take a gun!

Do your research and go to www.kbb.com and find out the invoice. Put a few feelers out there through MSN Carpoint, Autobytel, and a few others. Bid 'em against each other. They'll fold like a house of cards. Wait a few more weeks until the end of the month. Around the 28th or so. That's when they are the hungriest! And remember, drive it like you stole it!

Here's what I did:

1. Researched what others were paying in my area.
2. Found the dealer invoice price.
3. Went to Car Max and got a quote, on paper, for my trade-in.
4. Told dealer to through in tint (should have also asked for splash guards). Wheel locks were already installed.
5. Refused to pay destination charge.
6. If they try to haggle, go elsewhere.

It worked for me, and I got a good APR at 7.85% for 60 months.

my way is a little dishonest but it works.

Go at the end of the month to one dealership and get a salesman's business card. It helps to get the Main sales manger's. Then write on the back the price you want to pay, along with color. options, date, and fake intials. Then go to another dealer and ask if they can either match or beat the price. It also helps to go near closing so they feel rushed and won't think about all the details. This plan worked for me like a charm, I even got $100 off my asking price.

Forgot the most important tactic, as mentioned above...

Always deal and buy at the month's end!!!

Basically what mikeN said. drag the deal towards the end of the month. and buy it on the very last day. this is when there trying to get there quotas for the month. and will throw in all kinds of deals. I got my car on the last day of sept. and haggled till about 1 hour before they closed. they had the GM and all these other people throwing deals around.

as a genral rule i think all car dealers, not neccesairly the salesmen but the bussiness as a whole is a crooked bussiness so there are no rules any thing goes"sh*t on them b4 they sh*t on you"

i called another dealer in front of my salesman and asked them what they had in stock and that i was at another dealer. they had the silver w/ navi in stock and my dealer didn't so i proceeded to tell them what springfield quoted me. they beat the price by $300. i put em on hold and told the salesguy in front of me they beat his price by $900. mind you this is after haggling from $500 below his original price which was already below sticker. he came back with a disgruntled look on his face after seeing his mgr and told me it was a deal. i told him i'd walk otherwise.

I use the fax method suggest at www.fool.com/car and it worked well. Don't have to go from dealer to dealer looking for the best deal. I did something on top of it: get the best deal by faxing to dealers further away, then show the best bid to your nearest dealer in person and see if they are willing to beat it. If not, get it form the dealer who faxed you the best bid.

Although I paid $30,200 for my CL-S (non-navi), I actually came out ahead in the deal because they gave me a very good price for my trade-in. If I had haggled to get the car for a lower price they would have just given me less for my trade-in. For tax purposes, I think you're better off getting more for your trade-in.
